Caution is sweet, one thing that sucked IMHO when godchaux came in it was always straight piano, it's cool and all but I am a huge fan of the b3, love clavinet too. Hearing the b3 live is indescribable, it's always amazed me.
it seems to me that all of you are wrapped up in nostalgia. Pigpen the "keyboardist who got away"......he's good. but the dead are better off with out him. when he left the real magic happened....he was the worst element of the dead. he's the reason the hell's angels were surrounding the Dead for so long. Godchaux and Mydlan blow him away, they fit what the Dead is, so much more. just my opinion. don't freak out. and enough of this "oh, he's a Phish-kid, so he doesn't know anything about music."....first off, i was a dead head far before a Phish head....Phish got me in the end, because i actually got to go see them live. but i still love the dead. Pigpen just doesn't do it for me..... and i posted this in a "pig pen in the shit" thread, because counter-points make discussions, actual discussions, otherwise we're all just jerking eachother off. by saying "yeah, i love pigpen! he is the best! no one can say different or i hate them"...
Fit what the dead is man? GD is the acid test band brother, remember that ;o) Pigpen wasn't like a superb musician or anything, but you see that isn't ALL that matters because the man could get the party started. Listen to some of the shows from the 60s dude, the lovelights, the alligators, midnight hours, good morning little schoolgirls. IDK I just love that era of the dead that ended when pigpen left this earth. They became a lot more country and less psychedelic when godchaux came IMHO. And I'm not sure what you mean about the angels cause everyone in haight was friends with angels FWIU, they helped people there back in the day. And as far as phish goes, IDK it's just easy to rag on phish kids cause the majority of them suck for reasons other than them liking phish. I don't think that really says anything about musical taste, because phish has some sick music.
man kid, the hells angels were our first fucking wrecking crew. its casue of kids like you that i chastise phish kids. get a clue. pig pen rocks. all you need is a touch of mojo hand upon yer head
because of "kids" like me? why because i don't like one keyboardist? your fucking rediculous.....i have like 50 shows from the 60's, there great. but the dead, only got better and better. and the one thing in those shows that was a bummer, was shit like Pigpen singing "its a mans world".....i am not saying everything he did was bad, because i in no way feel like that. his stuff is just my least favorite. somthig has to be the lesat favorite right???..try to use my age against me, try using that i like phish against me.....i don't care, you all seem pretty ignorant and stuck in the past....open your mind, there is more dead past 1971....
i take my statement back of pigpen being my least favorite. in my haste to prove a point i forgot about Bruce Hornsby. I hate his keyboard choices....the most cheesy sounds ever!
This is why you neggs need to listen to Yes more often, cuz then all you have is Steve and no one to compare him too.
Alright! I warned you not to bad mouth Pigpen . I'm not freakin' out , but Owsley's not taking it so well. May I suggest keeping a low profile till he cools off. Otherwise you're just going to have to keep lookin' over your shoulder, and that's no way to live. Trey is an incredible guitar player & Phish is a tight unit. Any band that can cover Frankenstein they way they did and not miss a note gets praise from me. But to be honest Phish tends to get a little too corney for me. When you find yourself yelling at Phish or your stereo to STOP DOING THAT!, well it's a good indication that this band is just simply not my cup-o-tea but it's not like didn't give 'em a chance. Don't get me wrong like a dozen Phish shows in my collection mainly from 1994 to 1998. So it's not that I hate them, I just don't fully embrace them. You are correct, counter-points make discussions, actual discussions. But please don't fool yourself into think that is what you where doing. You sir stuck your naked asshole in this thread and farted and all I did was say that it stinks. Really seriously folks Pigpen use to sing a little song about turning on your Lovelight, lettin' shine bright and keep it shining. My recent post hasn't reflected that message at all. So if I'm going to proclaim that Pigpen is the shit at least there should be a flicker of lovelight shining. I don't know how much Pigpen you've heard, but from what you described it sounds like you based your opinion on the old acid test recordings. Another poster in this thread mention something about Roc Scully's observation & Bobby being too stoned on LSD. Bobby stopped dropping acid shortly after the acid test. I mean Jerry, Phil & Mickey were the acid eaters, and Billy to some extent by his own admission. You keep pointing out Pigpen "The Keyboardest" well yes he was an organ player, but that's not all he did. The Grateful Dead were a live band and Pigpen came alive in front of the audience and captivate them in ways the holy-roly preacher could only dream of. Pigpen was loved by everyone because he had a big heart and he loved performing. And to show I'm not pulling an opinion outta my ass I refer you to my source Grateful Dead - 1965-11-03 - Golden State Studios Grateful Dead - 1966-01-08 - The Fillmore Acid Test Grateful Dead - 1966-02-25 - Ivar Theater Grateful Dead - 1966-03-12 - The Pico Acid Test Grateful Dead - 1966-03-25 - Trouper's Hall Grateful Dead - 1966-05-19 - Avalon Ballroom Grateful Dead - 1967-01-14 - The Human Be-In, Golden Gate Park Grateful Dead - 1967-08-04 - Toronto O'keefe Center Grateful Dead - 1967-10-22 - Winterland Arena Grateful Dead - 1967-11-10 - Shrine Auditorium Grateful Dead - 1968-01-20 - Municipal Auditorium Eureka Grateful Dead - 1968-01-27 - Eagles Auditorium, Seattle Grateful Dead - 1968-02-14 - Carousel Ballroom Grateful Dead - 1968-03-26 - MelodyLand Theater(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1968-03-29 - Carousel Ballroom(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1968-03-30 - Carousel Ballroom(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1968-08-21 - Fillmore West Grateful Dead - 1968-08-22 - Fillmore West Grateful Dead - 1968-09-02 - Betty Nelson's Organic Rasberry Farm Grateful Dead - 1968-10-10 - The Matrix Grateful Dead - 1968-10-12 - Avalon Ballroom Grateful Dead - 1968-10-13 - Avalon Ballroom Grateful Dead - 1968-10-20 - Greek Theatre Grateful Dead - 1968-10-30 - The Matrix Grateful Dead - 1968-12-16 - The Matrix Grateful Dead - 1968-12-24 - The Matrix Grateful Dead - 1968-12-29 - Gulfstream Park Racetrack Grateful Dead - 1969-01-03 - Fillmore West Grateful Dead - 1969-02-07 - Stanley Theater Grateful Dead - 1969-02-11 - Fillmore East Grateful Dead - 1969-02-22 - Dream Bowl Grateful Dead - 1969-02-27 - Fillmore West Grateful Dead - 1969-02-28 - Fillmore West Grateful Dead - 1969-03-01 - Fillmore West Grateful Dead - 1969-03-02 - Fillmore West Grateful Dead - 1969-04-04 - Avalon Ballroom Grateful Dead - 1969-04-05 - Avalon Ballroom Grateful Dead - 1969-04-06 - Avalon Ballroom Grateful Dead - 1969-04-15 - The Music Box, Omaha(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1969-04-21 - The Ark Grateful Dead - 1969-04-22 - The Ark Grateful Dead - 1969-04-23 - The Ark Grateful Dead - 1969-05-03 - Winterland Arena(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1969-06-07 - Fillmore West Grateful Dead - 1969-08-28 - Family Dog at the Great Highway Grateful Dead - 1969-08-30 - Family Dog at the Great Highway Grateful Dead - 1969-11-02 - Family Dog at the Great Highway Grateful Dead - 1969-12-30 - Boston Tea Party Grateful Dead - 1969-12-31 - Boston Tea Party Grateful Dead - 1970-01-02 - Fillmore East Grateful Dead - 1970-01-03 - Fillmore East Grateful Dead - 1970-01-23 - Honolulu Civic Auditorium Grateful Dead - 1970-02-02 - Fox Theatre Grateful Dead - 1970-02-11 - Fillmore East Grateful Dead - 1970-02-14 - Fillmore East Grateful Dead - 1970-03-21 - Capitol Theater(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1970-04-15 - Winterland Arena Grateful Dead - 1970-05-15 - Fillmore East Grateful Dead - 1970-06-06 - Fillmore West Grateful Dead - 1970-06-07 - Fillmore West Grateful Dead - 1970-06-24 - Capitol Theater(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1970-09-19 - Fillmore East Grateful Dead - 1970-09-20 - Fillmore East(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1970-11-08 - Capitol Theater(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1970-12-28 - Legion Stadium(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1971-02-18 - Capitol Theater Grateful Dead - 1971-02-21 - Capitol Theater Grateful Dead - 1971-02-24 - Capitol Theater Grateful Dead - 1971-03-18 - Fox Theatre Grateful Dead - 1971-04-05 - Manhattan Center Grateful Dead - 1971-04-06 - Manhattan Center Grateful Dead - 1971-04-07 - Boston Music Hall Grateful Dead - 1971-04-08 - Boston Music Hall Grateful Dead - 1971-04-26 - Fillmore East Grateful Dead - 1971-04-28 - Fillmore East Grateful Dead - 1971-07-02 - Fillmore West Grateful Dead - 1971-08-05 - Hollywood Palladium(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1971-08-06 - Hollywood Palladium(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1971-08-14 - Berkeley Community Theater Grateful Dead - 1971-08-15 - Berkeley Community Theater Grateful Dead - 1971-11-07 - Harding Theater Grateful Dead - 1971-11-15 - Austin Municipal Auditorium Grateful Dead - 1971-12-04 - Felt Forum Grateful Dead - 1971-12-05 - Felt Forum Grateful Dead - 1971-12-06 - Felt Forum Grateful Dead - 1971-12-07 - Felt Forum Grateful Dead - 1971-12-10 - Fox Theatre Grateful Dead - 1971-12-14 - Hill Auditorium, Ann Arbor Grateful Dead - 1971-12-31 - Winterland Arena Grateful Dead - 1972-01-02 - Winterland Arena Grateful Dead - 1972-04-07 - Empire Pool, Wembley Grateful Dead - 1972-04-08 - Empire Pool, Wembley Grateful Dead - 1972-04-14 - Tivolis Koncertsal Grateful Dead - 1972-04-29 - Musikhalle, Hamburg, Germany(Aud) Grateful Dead - 1972-05-03 - Olympia Theater, Paris Grateful Dead - 1972-05-04 - Olympia Theater, Paris Grateful Dead - 1972-05-07 - Bickershaw Festival Grateful Dead - 1972-05-11 - Rotterdam Civic Hall Grateful Dead - 1972-05-16 - Radio Luxembourg Grateful Dead - 1972-05-18 - Kongressaal, Deutsches Museum Grateful Dead - 1972-05-23 - The Strand Lyceum Grateful Dead - 1972-05-25 - The Strand Lyceum Grateful Dead - 1972-05-26 - The Strand Lyceum So yes, Pigpen is the shit! Chow
Goin dahn to leezy-ana, get me a mooojo hand dam kid I even put muddy on haven't heard that song in a long time heh. It's cool how blues is like passed on through folk, lyrics one guy sings eventually get transformed and another guy sings it, and so on... just gets you fired up when one of your fav bands is improving and singing old lyrics. Yea it seems like a lot of people believe what they see on america's most wanted or something about certain angels, especially stories from 25+ years later, and don't have a grasp on what was going on in that era. (mid-late sixties) and micro, thumbs up on that list rofl...
I don't think it would fit for some reason, but then again you have a lot more yes listening under your belt than me.
i think steve could bust out a sick cryptical, or spanish jam even, but yea he would take up alot of room. would be sick though. remember back in 04' when we heard all dem roumors about a dead/yes summer tour? coulda shoulda woulda eh?
Nah dude that was towards scents and subtleties because of his remark how angels were associated with pig, when angels were associated with a hell of a lot of people into the scene in the sixties. But hey on the up and up, Hard to Handle from dicks picks 35!!!!! Listen to it!!
i'm not going to continue, because i don't dislike pigpen this much. it just got dragged on......and i refered to him as a "keyboardest" beacause in this business anyone who is associated with keys (ex. piano, synth, organ...etc) is given that title....but you were just nit picking, am i right?
