A Manley severe duty intake valve cracked over 200 degrees of the way around. I'm not sure how many revolutions this motor had left in it before it ate itself alive, but it wasn't many. 550 h.p. small block Chevy, about 220 hours of running in a boat.
a quarter mile i'll walk in the woods and watch them changing, instead of going by too fast to get a good look. yes i know, different things. different perspective. i don't mind walking five or ten miles to get there either if there isn't any path wide enough for a car to get there, as long as most of it is away from city pavement. of course i love most kind of mechanical objects, but to me, if all they can do is go fast, that seems kind of pointless. (the less nature has to be displaced or little furry creatures made homeless to make a place they can go, the better. same for sound levels)
A few years back Manley had a big problem with their valves, I know a few guys including me that lost a valve and took out a motor.
Been there. I use severe duty and inconel because my motors are for boats. The heat from the engine load eats valves, seats and pistons like there's no tomorrow. I get between 1.2 and 1.3 h.p. per c.i. from small block chevys (usually 421, 427, or 434 c.i.)and they last about 250 hours before rebuilds. It's a hobby for me. I have no idea how guys make money doing it. Don't get me started on Morel lifter issues...
I'm not an expert, but since the big end looks good by the cap bolts,I'd guess the aluminum was near the end of its life and cylinder pressure or a hydrolock drove the small end in like a wedge into a fatigue fissure. More Pontiacs..
The first batch that came out mid-year, (they were actually 1970 1/2 because of tooling issues with the new platform) were all white with blue stripes. The next batch had some medium blue metallic with white stripes and the traditional white with blue. Mine was the first batch... Never should have sold that car.
There was a 69 Trans Am... The 400 HD model was called "400" or Ram Air 400 if so equipped. I think the "Formula 400" name came later, but I could be mistaken. I almost bought a '68 with 400 4 speed. It just had "400" badges, no "formula"
When I was 17yo in 1981, I had a 67 firebird. Harvest gold with a black interior and 326 when I got it. Then I got ahold of a wrecked GTO and alot of the interior became oyster, and the motor became a 455. I put the dual gate his/Hurst setup into the console too. Sure wish I treated that car better.
