Phish, hands down. I judge bands by their live performances, and Phish is definately one of the best live bands out there.

I'm not a huge fan of the Grateful Dead, don't really know why.

someone said jerry and trey were just as good?

i dont know who the fuck trey is, but jerry's talent is rivaled by none. and i've never really heard phish's music, but phil's bass is insane.

i agree with kindwoman (thanks for not using a y),

As Bill Graham used to say - they are not the best at what they do, they are the only ones that do what they do, ladies and gentlemen, The Grateful Dead

I'm sure the same can be said about Phish.

In other words there is no comparing the two.

For me personally, The Grateful Dead and every reincarnation since grabs ahold of the inner depths of my soul more than any other band I have ever been exposed too and that will probably always be the case.

I saw them with Jerry about 25 times and about a dozen times since he left us to join the great jam in the sky. I feel blessed and fortunate to experience every milli-second of it all, whether they were 'on' or it was one of those nights that Jerry was barely registering a pulse. Hopefully I'll continue to be able to see Phil, Bobby, Bill, Mickey and their friends continue to push on as from what I saw this past summer, there is still more of the story to be told.

Phish on the other hand I have seen a good 70 times, met them all personally over the years being that they are from where I call home and can honestly say that there were plenty times after 1996 that I was downright dissappointed by the shows. Trey's ego really started to get in the way of the magic happening every night. The first time I noticed it was 12/29/94 and after that it started happening more and more frequently where the musical communication on stage was a fight, not a flight. It is for this reason that they have hung it up and why I gather there will never be another Phish performance.

There is no point in comparing these bands at all unless you are comparing the personal love that you as an individual have for them.

That being said, this foolish heart will always love the boys more than phish.

Thanks Jack Straw. Which is, by the way, one of my favorite Dead songs!

You can't really compare two bands that are so different and amazing. I can't choose.

Just like others said,"You cannot compare the both." This is so true. Yes, you could classify them both as jam bands, but both have their own unique way of geting us dancin'. I love them both. I have saw the boyz over 47 times and I have saw Phish 15 times. The Grateful Dead will always have a special place in my heart. But saying that, I love Phish but not like the dead. I do wish that Trey would get his head out of his ass so Phish could get back together because all of the "very young idiots" will be tourin' with The Dead this summer. I guess I will not be bringing my girls to see The Dead this summer............

If you guys are looking for a GREAT Jam Band to see? Check-out the likn below my sig. Umphrey's McGee will defiently blow your mind away. Comming to a town near you..................

phish is one tallllllented band, but it doesn't trigger nearly as much emotion out of me as grateful dead. grateful dead have an understanding of musical energy i dont think anyone (in my opinion) will ever come close to touching. and lyrically, i connect with robert hunter's poetry/songwriting like swdfuqwneflwuegf2. GD do it for me.

if it was WWF battle royal i would give it to fishman, if it was steel cage i'd give it to pig pen. if they were playin basketball id give it the dead by 5 1/2 pts cus they would be able to substitiute, but if it was a spelling bee i'd give it to phish cus they went to college.

    A few quick points:
Jerry made the sauce that Trey stirred.
Jerry was far less egotistical throughout his career.
    Jerry wasn't hyperactive :)
Jerry played less notes and the scales he played tended to be more sublime.

    But:
Trey had seemingly unlimited energy and talent, perhaps more so than Jerry!
Trey mastered the psychedelic soundscape and became its guide.
Phish represented the free for all, absolutely unrestrained but truly harmonious musicianship that the dead lost once they became a performance band after the acid tests.

I liked that comment though that Phish was musical masturbation and the Dead was like a long night of the best you've ever had. Everyone who posted that Phish would not exist without the Dead is right of course too.

I think drumminmama and dhs summed up my thoughts already and probably more eloquently. It was also so much more than the music. I will stand, Gratefully, as a deadhead.

Haha, Phish didn't have a bobby to deal with. and page is better than all of the dead keyboardists combined, save pig. fishman, while not espousing the same shamanic seriousness as the devils, especially hart, I think may have been a better song drummer than both combined (this doesn't include drums/space).
Its funny though how most are actually comparing Jerry and Trey. Did Jerry ever have a chance to hear Trey?
