chrissy, they were develped through research to try to better people's emotional and physical (and physiological) states. the research has been done because, well.... when you do scientific research and then try to learn from there, you can accomplish things. (meaning- helping people and larger issues and devolping answers for the future). No, labels are not perfect and there's no doubt they are man-made. However, without them just think of the alternative........
They might have been originally. The psycoligical association in the past has been quite shady to say the least. Also, i never claimed these labels are CORRECT. everyone is different, as i've mentioned many times in this thread. however, times have changed quite a bit (they're not perfect now of course), but i feel that overall the research done about personalities is valid. to use an example, the type A/type B personality is something throughly researched and the standards are different now...... i also "know" (figure out what that "know" means) that these things are real.... i know it's not clear cut....you ARE this or you ARE that. but guidelines help people change and help to control and prevent.
How aree the standarts different? For all I know, the time period makes no difference, these personality schemes were only globaly used recently... You "know" that they are real... yes, that makes complete sense.
the standards are different because they have changed.... it has become more difficult to diagnose someone with schizophrenia for example.... but we're going off on a whole nother issue right now b/c schizophrenia, for example, is not personality related. however, schizoid and schizotypal are.
More difficult? No way, the standarts are not so different, with the increasing awareness in mental health care, it should be easier.
That's the paradox of knowledge. The more you learn, the less you know. Socrates said something along those lines once. He was smart.
