I don't think that is fair to say without knowing me. If you are talking about the group of people who were at my house for the class....I would trust each and every one of them with a gun. I have been to a gun range with every one of them. A few of them are former military. Many of them are hunters. The rest of us were raised around guns. I did turn some friends away from the class because I didn't feel comfortable being a part of them getting a permit to carry. Not because I feel like they are dangerous but because I felt like they didn't have enough knowledge or practice with guns to be carrying. I had a few friends who had only shot a handful of times in their life ask to take the class. I wasn't comfortable being a part of that so I told them the class was full.

    I agree.

I look at it this way - cars are dangerous machines when driven by inexperienced, and or unfit drivers. Licensing people to drive helps to ensure that they are safe and knowledgeable drivers - it doesn't make 100% of license holders completely unable to cause harm with a motorized vehicle, but it greatly decreases the number of people killed by automobiles.

Knowledge is the key to success with anything. In this case knowledge is the key to safety and to having respect for what can happen anytime one handles a firearm the wrong way.

I know that it is easy to feel uneasy thinking about people carrying around concealed weapons, but I think most people would feel more uneasy if they knew how many people actually carry them now without a license or having taken a concealed weapons class.

I haven't been to one of the concealed weapons classes, but I know people who have. Two of them have their license now, but stopped carrying a weapon on their person after they took the classes. One of them keeps one in his vehicle, the other one leaves all weapons at home now. I know this from a discussion this past week at work. They both discussed things in the concealed weapons classes that they had never considered before, and they had been carrying weapons with them for years.

Edit: I forgot to get to the main point that I was trying to make. If a person feels the need to protect themselves by carrying a firearm (and I think that many people are justified in feeling this way especially in the u.s.), I think that taking and/or sponsoring the courses for concealed weapons is a responsible act.

Did you get the fancy ID with pic, Like a drivers licenses or just a piece of paper with ID#?

The county im from gives out the little ID ones, But the county I live in, The sheriff only does paper with name and ID#, Says 'that's all that's needed and nothing more'.

I have to renew my drivers license so I haven't gone to the sheriffs office yet. I'll let you know when I get it. I'm guessing Polk County will do the fancy ones but we'll see.
You don't know the side of town I'm from.....

I would think it should be mandatory so you can match pic/ID# plus DL. But im stuck with a piece of paper that is as good as any, But its kind of a loose end IMO.
Just curious which counties are doing the step ahead or the 'bare minimum'.

The guy that did our class was one that helped write a lot of the laws. He is really fighting having any connection between permit to carry and drivers license. He wants to keep them completely separate. He's worried if they connect your license to your permit then as soon as you get pulled over and the cop runs your license it will come up that you have a permit to carry and their gun will be drawn on you. I'm not sure if what you are saying is to have them somehow in the same database but its a bad idea. Right now there is no way for a cop to know if you have a permit to carry unless you tell them or they call the sheriffs office. There is no database to run your name through to find out.

I was talking about a carry ID with pic and # and a DL with matching pic. Instead of a piece of paper like I have. That way when a purchase or you have to present the ID, The info matches.
Mine says my name and permit holder # only, It could be printed easy and used by anyone with their name. That's the only connection I was talking about.

I just talked to my dad about his permit. He got his in union county. He said that he had a choice of which copy he wanted. He paid an extra $5 to get the actual card.

I asked about the ID type card and said 'until its mandatory' in Iowa, This is as far as ill go with it. I wanted the better piece of mind one, But didn't have a choice.
Then again, Some who do have the ID card, Show it off like a golden ticket.

He has a point, You don't want a mug shot for a CCW permit photo lmao. I highly doubt you will go there in walmart attire, But some just don't care.

I go everywhere in Wal-Mart attire. Hahaha. Yeah I wouldn't go to the sheriff's office wanting a permit to carry looking like a crazy hobo.

My heart always breaks for the victims in these kinds of scenarios.

I don't want to get into a debate about this but I will say that when you find out details of most of these shooters...almost none of them have obtained their guns legally and they are not carrying legally. The people who go through the proper training to get a permit to carry are not generally the same ones that commit these crimes. I would say as a general rule, we are law abiding citizens that are not out to hurt anybody. They do a complete background check on you when you get a permit. They don't just hand them out like free candy on Halloween. Please don't compare us to the mentally ill people that commit these crimes. We are not one and the same.

What I find disconcerting about some of these cases is they usually get (well, steal) their gun from someone who did own it legally. I don't really have a problem with gun owners but I wish people would be more responsible and lock them up securely.

If I had a permit to carry, for example, I would never leave my gun locked in my car. It is way too easy for someone to steal it.

:iagree: As a gun owner, my gun is my responsibility 100% of the time. Even when it isn't on me. I will NEVER leave my gun in my car. If I'm not carrying it on my person it will be left at home.

They actually make gun cases you can lock up with cut proof cables so you can connect it to the seat of your car in case you are carrying and you go somewhere you're not allowed to take your gun. That way you can lock it up and secure it in your car. Even if someone breaks in they won't be able to steal it.

This is why I love HF.. for me it's like a massive social experiment. Very crude and rough, far from accurate, but it's funny to see what people will post.. myself included. I love re-reading my posts, cos half of them don't make any sense, and all the others are full of really shit jokes that I thought were hilarious at the time.

I might start a thread soon with caricatures of the way I perceive the regulars internet personas.. think it'd be pretty interesting to see the responses.

Probably not allowed though, cos the world will end if someone gets offended.

People don't like the truth and think its a walk in the park to get certified. To me, A lot of it was common sense that is second nature with firearms. But most have no clue just what it takes and that the NICS and background check isn't 'good enough'. I got to hear my life told to the sheriff over the phone, You might be able to as well.
