all you saying "call the police" are a bunch of cunts. oh no, what about the property value of my house? what about ME? I don't like scary homeless people, they should be like me and everyone I know. seriously, unless the place turns into a cookup spot you have nothing to bitch about, you informant fucks.
I've squatted before in Brooklyn and seen it first hand. above all it is a community and lifestyle, which is tied in with the trainhopping world as Dave pointed out.

I've lived in loads of squats in Holland. Some of them are really nice actually, and the people are usually pretty cool. You get the hardcore anarcho punk types who can be ass hats, but generally most of the folk are hippies and artists. I used to live in one with loads of people who did juggling and clown shows for children, and we had a music studio, a stage for bands to play and herb garden. The the owner kicked us all out, knocked the building down and sold it for scrap, it's been a pile of bricks ever since.

my 1st point was I resent the calloused ease with which people would inform on squatters.
the 2nd was that a lot of people are squatters by choice and not just so called "bums", but even they deserve a roof over their heads as much as anyone.

    yea I know.

I looked up the place I stayed in and even found some class pictures! looks way cleaner than when I was there, though. I used to worry about stepping in shit and syringes.

A lot of people are squatters by choice and also deserve a roof over their head? So basically, they deserve to be given a place to stay without paying or even asking? They choose not to get their own place, but to take someone elses?

I don't agree with calling the police, but I don't agree with squatting.

squats are abandoned buildings. if they are owned by someone, the proprietor can call the law and have the squatters evacuated and I'm fine with that. but if a place isn't being used, why not?

I met lots of squatters, who generally only squatted places that were empty for a year and had no immediate use or plans for use. We have rules here in the Netherlands for squatting empty buildings by the way. You've got them there as well?
Anyway, as long as they don't tear the place up and don't cause inconvience other then being there I'd let them be. Been to some great parties at squatted places too. Rather have some cool squatters as my neighbours then some lousy squares watching me.

and a lot of places are owned by local government in a few cases.

there are some states here, or at least one, where a landowner, by law, must officially evict the squatters before calling the law, despite there being no contract, no rent, nothing.

this is because some people ARENT squatters by choice, and when you're in a bad situation and it gets below 0F (-17C) at night in the winter, every human being has a right to take refuge anyplace they can get it. if a building is abandoned and unused, then these people have the right to at least the most meager shelter.

not all homeless people have someplace they can go, and not always because they choose not to.

once you've been on the streets a while, destitute, its kinda hard to get new, clean, ironed clothes, regular bathing facilities on a regular basis, haircuts and so on...how can you get a job if you can't even take a bath or get clean clothes for an interview? and then there are those who have serious mental issues but no one who can, or no one who will, take care of them.

a lot of people "choose" to be homeless, but most do not, and when you're in a climate that gets into seriously dangerous weather conditions during certain times of the year, i think its perfectly fair to let them take refuge in unused buildings. if you own the place, i dont think theres any way to deny the right of a landowner to keep people out....

but if they take refuge from the elements, and a landowner doesnt have the balls to go tell them himself that they need to go somewhere different, then why should they have the right to call the police??

I agree. I'm not familiar with the rules and policy regarding squatters.

most don't live like that by choice, but a fair amount do.
