I heard this term, sqating, on TV the other day. From what I can gather it means a group of homeless people grouping together in an abandoned building. It took a long time and quite a few DVR rewinding to come to this conclusion, so please correct me if I'm wrong. At first I too imagined a group of ladies all taking a piss in the same house.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squatting let the wiki be your eyes. but, know, it does not have a brain, so use your own.
Wow i find that really surprising... i guess we all learn about different things but i thought 'squatter' was fairly common and well known term.
I've seen people doing this before. I worked with a guy for 3 months who did it......Just never heard the term
What about it creeps you out? The fact that humans beings are seeking shelter? That you have individuals living near you under a roof without paying taxes? Simply because they are squatters? I don't understand.....
Hmmm....while I realize humans CAN be scary, I still refuse to think of them as "things" and to make judgments regarding their character based solely off appearance/social status.
Fuck knows what they look like, i dont really care if you want to call them things, animals or spirits. The practicle stuff remains the same. Humans are capable of terrible stuff, especially if the think they can get away with it. Humans who are hidden away and not well known within a community are more able to get away. Im not saying squatters are bad people, but im not going to say they're good people either, they're just people. Sometimes people are wonderful, sometimes they're terrible and sometimes they're inbetween.
I completely agree, I just feel that "people" should all be given an equal opportunity to prove themselves "good" or "bad". I'm an extreme realist when it comes to analyzing the human condition Xac....trust me...I know where you are coming from.
And i know where you are coming from because i have seen it so many times myself. There does seem to be a feeling amongst the middle and upper classes that they can judge the lower classes as bad people and treat them like shit without knowing anything about the person. The phrase "fucking bum" comes to mind. I know it is a huge issue, living in Adelaide i realize that the population that has to deal with the toughest shit here is our homeless population, and thats not even including the abuse. But this is HF's, its best to leave notions of what others may be thinking at the door.
I can't even recall how many times I've heard the phrase "fucking bum". When I was on the streets with my friends, sitting near a busy road people drove by and yelled that all the time...along with some other demeaning things. What was interesting though was those people you'd look at eye to eye and feel this connection with...it was as though they could sense why you were there and that neither of you is any better than the other, because of your financial/home situation. I wouldn't be so adamant about defending peoples right to not being immediately judged if I myself hadn't gone through the process on a daily bases and seen it happen repeatedly to those I care so much for.
I wish there were squatters round this neighbourhood too. I'd ask them for a room, that way I wouldn't have to pay rent to some **** of a landlord.
