Perhaps with the dreads will come thicker skin... it'll help with that "journey" as well as life in general. A few years of legal drinking can help.

 

What does legal drinking have to do with anything? I'm obviously able to drink now regardless of its legality, so that doesn't affect me at all.

Please stop putting yourself on the cross. I was using the reference as a metaphor for getting older- again, YOU enhanced the meaning to include a personal attack. It's one thing to have unruly people creating a hostile environment with their unbridled hatred but it's quite another seeking to stifle free discourse by aggressively taking offense at every little thing. You're going to get older and will weather far worse than the verbal love taps being traded here. If these relatively mild volleys really bother you then you're in for a rough ride in life.

 

There's an implied message in that same metaphor that because I'm relatively young, I must be lacking in experience/knowledge/whatever. I'm taking offense (esp to jim) because the way you guys are talking about it suggests that you believe my age makes me inferior in some way.

And np, no I'm single right now, still wrapped up in a bunch of bullshit with my ex.

And I apologize if I'm quick to take offense and snap at people, but my home life right now is not the most positive environment. I'm basically completely unwelcome in my own home, and my parents are completely willing to make that obvious to me at all times. Pretty much completely hostile to me actually. Hopefully this'll be the last time I have to stay at their house over a school break though.

Youth does tend to suggest inexperience- though I know from my own observation it's no absolute.

Inability to take a playful jab because of your age suggests immaturity. It also indicates an expectation that everyone must adhere to YOUR standards of civility. Get off your high horse...

You must be fun as hell to hang around... especially when you're underage drin... ahhh I mean partying.

All I can say from my many many years of experience and resulting great wisdom (*strikes pretentious "thoughtful" pose*) is that if you have such thin skin you're probably not ready to grow dreads because there is an abundance of people more than willing to "share" their own disparaging narrow minded remarks and call you every name in the book.

 

I actually am not much of a drinker. My idea of fun involves me and one or two close friends and a certain herb.

Tough to tell intention through written text too - I interpreted the original comment in a very different light than you did.

I really wasn't concerned with the intent- it is what it is... no way to change another person's mindset so trying to do so is an exercise in futility. There's plenty that is often said with more than a measure of malice that can be diffused simply with humor if any response at all. There may well have been an implicit message with the post in question-- and the tone of your response illuminated a greater truth about yourself that is more unflattering than any idle internet jab could possibly be.
