See now you’ve destroyed my image of the gun toting redneck from florida who spends his weekends shooting pigs, quail, otters, raccoons, and bobcats hotwater
I'm actually from Washington DC and grew up going to shit like ballets and symphonies at the Kennedy Center. Sorry to burst your bubble hot. There are cultured and educated white males who live in the South and own guns.
Absolutely not. Most of the patriotic people I've met have been incredibly stupid, and I think that overall it puts people off unless you're from a 'cool' country... but if you are from a cool country then chances are you're not overly patriotic. Canada is actually really huge on patriotism and to be honest I think it has gotten to the point where a lot of us just think we're awesome and everyone loves us, but it's not at all true, and people are catching on and getting annoyed by it. Our news is constantly stressing Canadian connections to all of this shit and it just makes us seem pathetic and insecure about our national identity. And at the same time, the country has been totally going to shit and I'm increasingly more embarrassed by it. We used to top all of these polls for highest standard of living, etc... but all of that has changed and we kind of suck now. We're one of the worst polluting nations in the world and it's actually getting harder to find clean land... we have all kinds of toxins in our ecosystems and they're getting into our bloodstreams as well. It's really hard to love your country when the government's biggest priority seems to be drilling for carbon-intensive fuel that they can't even sell to the Americans because it's so dirty... and you get these fucking backwards rednecks with their global warming denialism and money money money bullshit leaving behind toxic lakes for their children to clean up once we're a wasteland that nobody cares about because there isn't any oil anymore. It's also costing us so much to get it out of the ground that it's hardly even going to turn a profit for the short amount of time that people are still willing to buy it. You have foreign labor making short term profits and shop class refugees making ridiculous salaries over something that isn't even bringing that much money into the country, and is ultimately going to cost a fortune to clean up if it's even possible to clean it up. I hate our PM so much I can't stand it and when he finally gets kicked out it will be a great day for everyone... but the damage is already done.
I don't know a single patriotic Canadian. And my mom lived there for years so I know quite a lot. What's a 'cool' country anyway?
I still love my country. It's a hell of a lot better than a lot of other places on earth. Idk if that makes me a patriot or not.
I'll tell you guys what my 84 yr old grandpa recently told me about all the patriotism we see being paraded around. He is a Korean War vet who is very proud of his service and he told me point blank that what he sees today reminds him of Nazi Germany. The blind leading the blind. I never expected him to say something like that. I keep my political opinions fairly vague around him so I was kind of pleasantly surprised to find out that he felt so strongly on the subject.
Fair enough. For what it's worth, I would've just broken his face up a little and not shot him. Kid definitely learned the hard way.
Was that his position during the Bush administration or did he adopt this view only after the election of Barack Obama? Hotwater
Really? Many Canadians have an arrogant attitude that they're the best and that their country in infallible. I think Canada is a beautiful country, and if I was forced to choose a favorite city, it would be Toronto (and I generally don't like cities), but I despise Canadian government as much, if not more than, US government. Canada has some extremely tyrannical laws (just look at the Ernst Zundel case), but people think that because they're more lenient with potsmokers, everything is all good. I wouldn't want to live in Canada, 1) because of its government, and 2) because of all the arrogant people. I would be just fine living alone in the Canadian wilderness, however, away from it all.
glory not in this that you love your country, glory rather in this, that you love humanity and the web of life. patriotism is the making of a lame excuse for national exceptionalism.
Yeah my mom lived in Toronto. I wouldn't consider them patriotic, just pompous that they are more up on literature, music and arts than their Southern neighbors.
