Yep... I say do whatever the fuck you want. Just let me do what I want..

You don't fuck with me, I don't fuck with you, everyone is happy. I go to work, pay my bills, kiss my wife and daughter, maybe have some action in the sack. Drink some beers, and life goes on...

Although, SOMETHING is in the air, you can't deny that.. This planet has become a real pressure cooker, and I think a lot of this bullshit is staged to try and keep it from exploding.. "I want to attack the ME for it's oil... Oh look Paris Hilton's Snatch is on TV... Tomorrow boys, Tomorrow...."

It's nothing more than cheap entertainment made solely thanks to the principle of question and demand. So that is the pity, we (the majority of people that watch tv etc.) apparently want this crap.

I think they have it confused... I want REAL pussy, not TV pussy lol... Although you are right, we want sex and violence. The more gratuitous the better.

As I mentioned before it is what sells the advertising spaces. And that's the goal of modern entertainment, get the suckers to pay for service, and then charge advertisers an arm and a leg to send them a message. So of course the more viewers the better.

And we all know that sex and violence are what drives the world... The two primordial things that humanity has and always will have. :afro:

    CLASSIC :D

Of course, the sad thing is I don't think many people would even remember that. And it's not high on the list to get recirculated... I think we should band together and make it our mission to make sure the good stuff doesn't get buried in shit lol...

You know... That isn't a bad idea, I'm sure other people have the same idea.... :afro:

I'm not really afraid of that. Just like there always will be a giant amount of stuff on tv and in music to dislike there will be a demand for 'good'' stuff too. It's not only a matter of subconscious and superficial demand but also just a matter of taste in the end. And to be clear I have no problem with sex and violence on tv by definition. It's all in the context.

You have a point there. However, it seems more and more we are turning towards "Justin Bieber" type music and "Jersey Shore" type shows... It's just so... YUCK... I admit there have been a few good shows come out, and some great songs, but always by older bands.. I haven't seen any new bands that were good... *sigh... I guess it's just a sign of the times..

But still, when there are more people in the world worshiping characters like "Justin Bieber" and "Hanna Montana" it just makes you want to vomit and slap some sense into them...

It can't be a coincidence that all the haters come out to bash the "waste of TV time" sexually-oriented pop culture shows, while nobody ever seems to care that there are so many hours used to cover things like poker, obscure sports, cooking high-fat foods, boat restoration, dog grooming, etc. This can't be about the inefficient use of the 500+ channels. It looks more like a bunch of guys piling on the kind of hot girls who wouldn't give them the time of day when they were young, single, and horny.

Just participating in this thread for a few days has given me a better idea of what it must be like to be a celebrity who has a lot of haters. Reading back through this thread, it amazes me just how much anger is in it. Paris must be tougher than I thought. I wouldn't want to take that kind of heat every day of the year.

But when your enemies hate you this much, you know you're doing something right. ;)

And in case you didn't know, a lot of people watch shows like Jersey Shore to laugh at them. If Snookie understood what most people watching her show honestly thought about her, she wouldn't want to be on TV.

If you like intellectually stimulating TV and music, then support it. Send a contribution to PBS. Buy a classical CD or catch a concert. Go to the theater and see a play. Watch a documentary, and post online about what you learned from it. Making a bunch of Archie Bunker type comments about everybody having bad taste won't help the arts survive. It just makes you look 100 years old.

I don't think that making comments about the absurdity that is Paris Hilton makes you an "Archie Bunker" type. I am hardly a "Archie (or would I be an Edith) Bunker" type and I can't stand Paris, The Kardashians, etc.

Please explain to me how voicing an opinion about a reality TV celebrity is in any way shape or form damaging to the arts??? What does Paris Hilton have to do with the arts anyway? I always love to hear your opinion Karen but you lost me on that concept.

You seem to have your opinion steadily fixed already. But like said earlier the sexual aspect is not the main disturbance for every person (you seem to focus on the sexual aspect), it is also her obnoxious and disrespectful behaviour when she's around different people that get's a stage and gets glorified by gullible fans.
Enemies? Hah. That's your perspective again. And I think many people agree about your other examples of rubbish tv although for example boat restoration and cooking programs are a total different issue so it is logical it has not been in the equation here. On the other hand Jersey Shore and Paris hilton's shows show a direct lack of respect to others and all in all give a shallow outlook on life while poker or dog grooming only focus on a certain aspect, although they may be considered lame, shallow and immoral by some too :p

Tell me what you think Archie Bunker would say about her. You know.

Do you ever want to sound like that? One of my worst fears, as I get older, is that someday I'll start thinking and talking like my grandparents' generation. Sometimes you have to take a step back and ask yourself, "How did that come across?" I catch myself slipping, sometimes.

People keep criticizing "bad" television as if it accomplishes something to do so. It doesn't. Demanding that the Kardashians be taken off the air doesn't increase the chances that it would be replaced with something better. Sophisticated programming struggles due to lack of viewer interest and support, not shortage of bandwidth. There is no shortage.

If you want TV to be better, your time and effort is better spent focusing on the shows and channels that you like the most. If you don't, then don't complain if they go away someday, and get replaced with Jersey Shore reruns.

Or, if you prefer some other medium, don't forget that money runs their world too.

I like a variety of things, some sophisticated, some not. I see no connection between them. "Survivor" on CBS doesn't directly compete with my local symphony or theater group. I can enjoy it all. None of them define me as a person. That's just the way I see it.

She focuses on sex. Don't forget whose name is in the thread title.

Archie Bunker would call her a whore.
I just think she is a waste of time.

I would not have a problem sounding like my Grandma, she was an awesome lady.

I don't think the Kardashians should be pulled off TV.
I don't really care if people want to watch them.
I still think they are a waste of time.

    "Better" TV?
    I don't really watch television.
I feel television is a medium for advertisements, and that is one reason I do not partake in the "mass mind rape".

Still not seeing a connection between reality TV, Paris Hilton and the "arts".

    Awesome vid, and great points.

I guess I hadn't really thought about it from that angle. Why should we care that people want to watch them? Well we shouldn't we should let people watch what they want...

Just one problem.. I want to watch the "mass mind rape" WITHOUT her blocking the airways.

I want her to make room for the TV shows and programs I actually like!

I like to watch movies, comedy, drama, TV series.. But then she hogs the airways and takes up space for some of the other stuff I want to watch.

It's pretty sad, but sometimes all you want to do is turn on the TV. Sure it's just mindless entertainment, but it helps to unwind after a hard days work. Have a few beers, watch some TV.. Go to bed, and get up and repeat the process over again.

Someone once said that beer was the opiate of the masses.. While another said TV was the opiate of the masses. Well, why can't I enjoy BOTH without people like Paris Hilton barging their way into my favorite programming?:afro:

exactly, nobody cares about those other shows, so there are no threads about them in which to bash them.

    LOL... BAZINGA!

Yep... Nobody likes them, so no point in bashing them, and they are generally on TV when most people are working, sleeping, taking a dump, or just about anything else more important than that.

It's infuriating that Paris Hilton gets prime time.. She should be right up there with boat restoration projects.. Hell, they might get more viewers that way at 2 in the morning :p :afro:

I think you know better why I posted that. You focussed on her focus on sex and projected it on people like me while her focus on sex is not even the main issue why I dislike her show. I think she has every right to focus on what she want/interests her and when I said she can flaunt whatever she want how many times I ment it, I just wish nobody cared so there would be no purpose to broadcast her obnoxious behaviour and celebrate it as if it was something worthwile.

    I agree Asmodean :)

 What show are you talking about? Except for a few short pieces on "Entertainment Tonight", the E! channel is the only place I've seen her on TV this year, and she's not on there very often. Last year, she had a reality show on the Oxygen Network (which I never saw). I can't imagine you watching anything on Oxygen. I don't see you as an Oxygen or E! channel kind of guy.

And you need to explain this national shortage of TV time that you keep talking about. The average working person only has about 3 or 4 hours a day that they can watch TV. With a DVR or VCR and a cable system with 500 channels, that gives you 12,000 hours of programming to pick from every day. That's about 3000 times more than you can watch.

    You're talking in circles.
