Yep.. As a whole society has gone to the crapper. And then we flushed, but we keep piling more crap on. And true.. it is easier to ignore on TV.. If we voice our opinions to it, it doesn't listen or reply. We can throw shoes at it, and nothing. Here, if we voice our opinions and views, then there is a slight glimmer of hope that we can start a ripple effect and maybe make society better... We're talking about pop culture. Of course it's going to be shallow and superficial. For most people, it's a fun, meaningless little diversion and escape from the serious parts of their day. If you don't like things that aren't serious, then ignore it! This idea of critiquing pop culture and the people who are involved in it, as if it's all supposed to be something else, makes absolutely no sense.
How so, in this case it's in the motivation behind it. When you'd force your opinion on another it is something else but just giving yours instead of being an apathetic lame-o because it's not the 'cool' thing to proclaim is not a bad thing.

So let us criticize what we feel strong about, which is not in the first place the individual Paris Hilton herself but how and why she get the amount of attention she gets. You yourself said so it influences other peeps (mostly gullible teens) so it is clearly not only about pop culture. What mostly intrigue me though is not the influence she has but the amount of airtime she gets in the first place and the (obviously commercial and cheap entertainment) reasons for it, which does not only says something about pop culture but american and most likely 'western' culture in general.
The thing that bugs me the most in this thread is the fact that it has some posts that could be paraphrased, "it's not okay for you to be different from me" or "it's not okay for your social group to think differently from my group". I run into that kind of thinking all over the internet, on all kinds of topics. And it's always a one-way street, with the moral conservatives coming down on the moral liberals for their lifestyles, never the other way around. You may have noticed that I didn't say or imply that Piaf should be a slut or a nudist. Since she's a mentally competent adult, I think she has the right to live her personal life in whatever way she thinks is appropriate, without having to justify any part of it to anyone. I'll be absolutely shocked if she ever says anything similar to me. My grasp of social tolerance began when I first realized that there are plenty of people in the world who have grown up without any exposure to any of the things that used to be so important in my life, and most of them seemed to be getting along just fine. Why would it be right for me to judge them? I'm nobody special. Have you looked at a schedule recently for one of the cable TV systems with 500+ channels? Everything is getting a lot of airtime these days. I don't know who watches all those obscure shows, but it doesn't really matter to me. Also, if you looked at a TV schedule, you would see that Kim Kardashian is the current pop culture 'it' girl. I don't choose to watch her show regularly, but I can live with the fact that other people do. In a few years, Kim will be replaced by somebody else, and you probably won't like her either. I'll wait and see. Paris Hilton actually gets less media attention these days than any of Kim's sisters or half-sisters. Khloe is my favorite of that bunch.
