I haven't been keeping up with her recently, but I think there is one thing Paris Hilton will be remembered for. There were a few girls wearing short skirts without panties 25 years before she did it, but it wasn't mainstream, and no celebrity had ever openly done so and let photographers look up her dress. After Paris started being regularly photographed getting out of cars at nightclubs with her waxed pussy showing, it sort of became a standard thing for hot, slutty girls to do. A lot of younger girls grew up thinking this was kind of cool and not a big deal, which made them more comfortable with the idea of sending out nude cell phone pics and crotch close-ups. I don't think any of this will ever go back to being as shocking and scandalous as it was before. If Paris Hilton hadn't taken the lead, somebody else would have eventually done it, but somebody had to be first. That's going to make her the answer to a pop culture trivia question, forever.
so basically, you are saying that no matter how unattractive a chick is, if she wags her hoo haw in public, then she is going to be famous for life? I think somewhere, sometime down the line we went horribly horribly wrong as a race then. Oh well... I guess it's her prerogative if she wants to do that, however, it completely ruins it for everyone else, and for generations to come.... Well, good news is MY daughter will just say "Paris WHO".. Of course, there will be some other new hot skank on the block... never ending battle, never ending battle...
I have no idea how anybody could read what I wrote and get that out of it. I'm saying the opposite. I think Paris is probably the only person who is famous mainly for that reason, and it will probably never happen again to anyone, because there are no more body parts left to show that have shock value anymore. Without all the flashing, the fame that came from her sex tape wouldn't have lasted more than a couple of years. Sex tapes have been around for a long time. They come and go. And quite honestly, it takes a lot more guts to be the first to do something edgy, in a very public way. You never know what the reaction is going to be. I admire people who are willing to step out there and try something radical, not knowing if it will be a disaster. I wish I was more like that myself. I can't even talk myself into participating in a Topless Day protest, where I know there will be people who strongly disagree. Ruins it? Just the opposite is actually true. Showing it all went mainstream, which means that any girl can do it now, if she wants to. My friends' daughters say that in some schools, it isn't uncommon for a girl to show her interest in a guy by sending him a crotch close-up. Boys trade and collect them on their phones. The high school boys of America should take up a collection and build a Paris Hilton statue somewhere. She definitely improved their lives. Only trivia buffs will ultimately care who was first to do something that is here to stay, unless the Taliban takes over. It was hard not to, back when she was the 'it' girl, and you could hardly turn on a TV without seeing and hearing about her. She definitely had her 15 minutes of fame, and then some.
I'm still not following his thought process. For guys, the trend is nothing but good news. They always want to see as much as they can. For girls, it's one more tool we can use for flirting, if we want. I only see a problem for girls who want to intentionally shock people. It's getting harder to find things to do.
To be clear I mean your opinion that it is good news isn't the actual truth, not Sam101's statement (which happen to be just an opinion as well of course). I don't see that trend as a good thing at all but I also wasn't aware the pussy flashing thing was a trend and I doubt it will have a staying influence.
Thanks for downplaying my wisdom of the ages LOL Yes, it is only my opinion, and I openly accept other opinions as well. I'm very divided on this topic to be honest. I mean, I don't think people should get famous for wagging their genitalia in public. I mean, look how many porn stars there are? They should all have hollywood stars then by that logic. However, I am in complete agreement with you that pussy flashing can't be a good thing (of course it's a good thing to see them, however flashing in public is not a good thing in my opinion).. However, we also need to remember that the human race is hard wired to love sex, and sex sells, so I'm afraid the trend won't die out as quickly as say.. the pet rock lol
Does it really need to be said that all posts in these type threads are opinions? I thought it was obvious. Showing more skin is an American trend that has been going on for at least 100 years, advancing very gradually, except in the '60's when it went faster. Anything that has shock value for one generation becomes accepted standard practice by the next generation. When has anything like this ever died out? Streaking is the only example I can think of. Flashing (upper and lower) has been going on for at least 40 years in New Orleans, although boob flashing has always been more common than ass or vagina. Then it spread to Fort Lauderdale, when it was still the big college spring break destination, and then to the hardcore hedonist crowd at colleges everywhere. It was never done where prudes were around. The only unique thing Paris Hilton did was let the Hollywood photographers get some graphic shots, which went viral on the internet. That was risky, because the public could have demanded that she be arrested. Instead, other people like Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears started doing the same thing, and nobody went to jail. Nobody got thrown out of any LA clubs, or rejected in any way by the pop culture world. Younger girls (especially 3 to 6 years younger) were impressed, and started copying them. Another common trick (I don't know who came up with this one) is for a girl to ask for a guy's cell phone at a table, put it between her legs, take a commando closeup, and hand it back to him. Nobody else in the place sees anything. Once any trend like this gets into high schools, there is no stopping it. Every part of hedonism is a competition there. You may eventually think the popularity of flashing has dropped off, if you stop hearing much about it, but that's just what happens when something has been around for a while. There's nothing new to say about it. I think part of its appeal is the fact that you can't get pregnant or catch an STD from exhibitionism, so it seems like a safer alternative to most of the other ways you can get and maintain an edgy reputation. If you don't show your face in any pics, nobody can prove who it is, or what their age is. Do you have no reading comprehension at all? Exactly one person got something major out of this. A few other celebrities got a few extra popularity points for flashing, but they already had their careers established before that. Jenna Jamison is the only porn star to ever become nationally famous. What other women are you thinking about?
I thought the same but since you described the opposite as the actual truth I couldn't resist to add my thought about that. You obviously dig that kind of stuff and wish to credit Paris Hilton for it but I am indifferent to these kinds of action and even if I would think it is great too I still would regard Paris as a banal individual (not only because she flashed her 'hoo haw') which is her choice but when it gets a stage people will have their opinions.
She did not actually date all of those people. Lugner, for example, was only someone she went to the Vienna Opera Ball with. It was not really a date as Lugner's wife was there.
... in my opinion. Whenever somebody is the first to do something, the argument can always be made that somebody else would have probably done it soon, if that one person hadn't been around. But the fact is, somebody else didn't do it first. History is what it is. You know how it goes sometimes. Columbus discovered America (for Europeans) while he was looking for India, and he didn't even know he was in the wrong place. But he was still here. His stupidity doesn't mean that nobody should know his name or what he did. I've always been fascinated by social changes and the things that drive them. The changes can be either positive or negative. She isn't very bright. I guarantee you that she doesn't consider herself a serious student of social history or any branch of philosophy. She wasn't planning out her wardrobe choices in light of their possible social impact on the future. She might have even been drunk or high at the time, which would put her close to the intellectual level of the cow that kicked over the lantern and started the Great Chicago Fire. I knew people in college who had seriously studied the culture of the ancient Greeks and Romans, and were personally impacted by what they learned about those ancient views on sexuality and hedonism. I can think of two girls I knew very well who would have been more than willing to spread their legs for the media in an effort to make an intentional social impact, but they never got that chance, because their names were not nationally known. It didn't matter what they did. A lot of the time, maybe most of the time, changing the world is more a matter of luck than anything else.
I must have missed this. I know sleazy tabloid magazines like to take pictures of women getting out of a car to see if they can catch such a shot. But I hadn't realised Paris had swung her legs open so the photographer could get a better shot.
I haven't seen a picture like that, but it doesn't matter. She knew what was going to happen. Every girl knows about cars and short dresses. She knew the photographers were always waiting for her, and followed her to her car every night. When you dress that way to go out, you think carefully about what you're going to show, when and where, and who you're going to show it to. Or you just decide to say, to hell with it, I'm gonna show it all to whoever happens to be in the right place at the right time. If she tries to play innocent about giving somebody a good look, she's lying.
Luckily not every guy digs a slut. And not every girl is a skank. Anyone who sees this as a tool for flirting disgusts me.
That people like her get ANY attention shows how cheapened this society has gotten. Just a glimpse of clam gets everyone all excited. Shallow, shallow people.
