    Fuck PETA.

A woman wearing a PETA sweatshirt cussed me out and threatened to call animal services because I tied my dog up outside a coffee shop. I was sitting 2 feet from my dog on the other side of a window catching up with an old friend. This woman went fuckin nuts telling me all kinds of crazy shit. Said she was going to freeze to death while I sip on my hot coffee.....it was about 45 degrees and sunny. I bursted out in a mad laughter at the woman, I couldn't help it. I told her that the cold weather helps condition the fur for a good scarf. Then continued to laugh uncontrollably.

If she only knew how spoiled my dog is lol. She lives the good life

That's what I also came away with. They don't think any animal should be made to live as a pet.

My dog wouldn't lift her head off of my couch for the chance to live free. She likes soft things. Pillows are her favorite

We do need some evidence. It's a difficult one this. The no kill center seem to want to save 100% of the 'savable' animals. Regardless of their mental state, and regardless if it means the animal has to stay in a shelter for the rest of it's life. That feels like the animals would be existing rather than living. Perhaps PETA are a little to militant with regards to trying to prevent animal suffering - however that may manifest itself.
Maybe the no kill center needs to work with PETA to take some of the animals off their hands.
I have a feeling, though, there are too bigger ego's going on all round here.
    And too entrenched ideologies.
Coupled with the fact both groups are American - well, that's a ....just joking :p

    I agree.

I think it is certain animals should not be pets. Not cats or dogs. But reptiles, 'wild' animals etc.

Meh, I'm somewhat indifferent now to PETA. I used to hate them, but I have to admit that euthanasia article raises some interesting points, and in the end I guess I support them for if nothing else raising awareness and activism.

Because it costs a lot of money to feed and house them, and they would rather just put the donations in their pockets.

I agree that no kill shelters have problems. There are exceptions, but it generally means they're rural, and that they have a good donor/volunteer community and they may turn down animals.

But as I understand it, PETA takes animals that they say will be given a chance at adoption, not necessarially from no kill shelters, but animals that the normal shelter or vet thinks can be adopted.

I know it's one instance (that lead to a bigger scandal) but like the vet that gave up the cats that he saw no problem with, and they killed them in the parking lot and dumpstered them. And of course, the PETA guys got off, they have hard-hitting lawyers, they'll send you a threatening letter for just saying that any of that happened, given that they shimmied out of the charges.

The page about killing animals with all the pictures of happy animals is just creepy. If they said "we think that pets are better off dead, and that it's immoral to keep them even if they like it, because they should not be domesticated at all" well, I would NOT agree, but I could respect their opinion. But that isn't what they say, they double-talk about happy animals with better lives and great homes, and how they're forced to kill some unfortionate animals.

I think I get it, but I strongly disagree, and think that it's as unreasonable and immoral as pushing the free market simply because you wish that's how human nature worked, when it's not really how it works. They think that animals simply should not be domesticated (of course, if it had not been for domesticated animals, we would all be cavemen.... but that's beyond the point) and they think that it's more ethical to kill domestic animals that are many thousands of generations into domestication, than to accept that they exist and care for them. I think this is repulsive, even if I understand it. Especially their pushing to kill feral cats, instead of neuter/spay/release them, which lets them keep living on there own or with some human help, pretty much how they please.

I think the whole thing attracts people who want to be absolutists and take the MOST extreme stand on something that they can. It's sort of like marxist lenninism: you've got to break a few eggs to make an omlet, and if the end is desirable, it justifies any means. You're going to improve the situation of humans or animals by throwing them in the gulag and then in the ground.

Throwing dead animals in a dumpster is clearly not on.
I have read they did that because it stunk up their van.
That seems believable one time, but it was more than once.
Is that PETA policy? I doubt it.
Euthanasing animals in the back of the van seems rather seedy to me - but the animals seem to have been destined to be killed, anyway.
They were already the cast offs from another shelter - the over-flow, if you will.
If one shelter could not find homes for them, what is the likelihood another would?
I have not read a balanced view of the case, though - just from either end of the spectrum.

They don't think pets are better off dead, though.
They seem to think there is a glut of animals that get tossed aside.
And that when people buy pets they want 'new' ones - not 'old' ones.
That seems to be their point.
They are left to clear up all the animals that are abandoned and unwanted - virtually for free.
They seem to be the last resort, and seem to willingly accept them, so atleast they get a good death.
Which clearly does not happen 100% of the time.

Everything that I have read that is negative seems to have come from one source, and occured a few years ago.
I have no idea if PETA have rectified any weakness, but would not bash them over the head with dated evidence.
I know they do exactly the same thing, though.

I'm just trying to find some fairness here, to be honest.

Like I've said, I think it is certain animals, not all animals.

Rick Berman is/was a mouthpiece for many trade groups, among them the Restaurant Association of America.
It's like having the Beef Producers give evidence.
Take it all with a pound of salt.

PETA does enough to discredit themselves.

I'm just saying, I have a very successful local humane society (several of them, actually, that cooperate in a several-county area). They kill a few animals, generally dogs that have already been adopted and then attacked people, unprovoked, more than once, possibly with more than one owner. They adopt out a lot of adult dogs and cats, and give extensive training/behaviour fixing/medical care when it's needed. If an animal is "un-adoptable" it will probably not be killed, but end up with a volunteer or other trusted friend (who won't ditch it) for free.

The whole thing is donation run, and is able to manage their numbers with very little killing. They don't have a high priced legal team who runs around sending cease and desist letters to opposition, they don't get millions of dollars in annual donations, they don't protest anyone or anything, they don't run ads (remember PETA running fucking super bowl ads to prevent the killing of animals? Ironic? I wonder how many of these animals they could have given great lives for the REST of their natural lives, with that money.... I'm guessing, ALL OF THEM) trying to change anyone's diet. They just take care of animals and find them homes by being involved in the community and using resturants and stores and such to adveratise and find voluteers and adoptive owners. They could spend time running big hateful protests, but they don't, they spend that time fixing things, and euthanize just about nothing, as a result. They DO have several vans, but they're all used for picking up animals for rescue, or emergency segregation or housing, if there's a fire or something -- they do NOT have a mobile kitten execution station.

So, I think PETA are a hateful joke who like whining. I just don't see them doing things that say that they care about animals, only things that say they like ridiculing others, and holding some sort of percieved moral high ground.

The only two groups, that I know of, who operate death vans: The People's Republic of China, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

WOW! Do Ma and Pa Walton run this place up in the mountains, and does little Jo - from down the river - comes and work for free in the school holidays.? :D

Seriously, the place sounds almost perfect. And god bless them if everything you say is true (I have no reason to doubt you).

Our local Humane Society is also a no kill shelter that is run on donations. Some of the people are obviously paid but most of the workers are volunteers. They also generate some income from reasonable spay/neuter clinic, clinics for shots, and lessons for dog training etc. All three of the dogs that I have had have come from the Humane Society. :2thumbsup:

Which is better: life in a cage or death by sleep? I'd say the latter.

The inescapable fact is that there is a mismatch between the number of animals needing adoption and suitable homes.

So your anger is misdirected; pet owners who do not spay and neuter their animals as well as for-profit breeders are the real cause of this tragedy.

Well, there's some problems. For instance, one of the nearby towns has a large stray/feral cat problem, and a lot of them have feline AIDS, so they have to be careful about what they take in, and what they even touch, and they do euthanize any that they bring in that turn out to have it, because it can spread quickly and is a danger to any other cats that even live nearby.

I know that it would be much harder in a big urban area with less personal accountability and such. But my point is that PETA, with their massive budgets, COULD be doing much better to actually look out for animals, when they seem to mostly want attention, and see actually helping animals as sort of being in the way of all that attention. If you're busy helping animals, you'd have less time to drive your prius around and lecture people and hold signs ;)

I love the Humane Society. They're people I can definitely support. I've always gotten pets there, and they often visit nursing homes and let the elderly play with the pets, which in turns get's the pets acclimated to being held.
