Largely by coincidence, we have always seemed to end up with one dog and one cat. People always seem surprised that despite the large difference in size, rather than just tolerate each other, they become the best of friends, playing and sleeping together. During our first dogs final weeks, the cat spent hours licking and cleaning his coat. He was like a lost soul when the dog finally died.
