British commentator Brendan O'Neil thinks that Australia should be proud of its coal industry. In a way I agree. We would certainly be financially worse off without it. A couple of decades ago I remember seeing a coal train at Singleton. It was an awesome sight. Four locomotives and it snaked on for kilometres.

I heard somewhere that the reason we don't use trains frequently to cart stuff interstate is because each state has different rails and the trains can't line up on the different rails. Not sure how true that is, I'm pretty sure it was pub banter but if it's true in many way what a joke. I'm a big fan of using trains to get the bigger nuisance trucks off the roads.

The biggest train I saw was in Perth about two years ago and it just didn't seem to end. I was down in Fremantle on the docks sinking some bevies. It was huge and also an awesome site. It carried that much load I wondered why aren't we funding this?
