Spreading public awareness about the dangers of obesity, and how it affects not only the person suffering, but those of us who have to pay our taxes and reduce the number of airplane and movie theater seats to accommodate them. Banning fatty foods via government policy to protect people from their own choices is big nanny. Not spreading public awareness. Huge difference.

As I pointed out above, obesity puts a bigger strain on healthcare services than smokers. Even in universal systems, healthcare supply is limited. When people have unhealthy lifestyle choices, healthcare services become more scarce.

I'm not perfectly built myself. I can stand to lose 20 pounds. My own fat shaming I inflict upon myself motivates me to get better.

Must be a generational and a cultural difference between USA and UK. I am a kid of the 80s-90s, and anti-smoking campaigns were at their peak. My family's car came standard with 7 ash trays. The smoker bad boy image was on the decline. There's a good reason why images of Barack Obama smoking cigarettes were kept hidden and not discussed by the media. Although I've never been to the UK, I had some British friends from college who insisted on rolling spliffs rather than joints. When I studied abroad in Eastern Europe, smoking was much more commonplace.

I get that health and physiology is very complex, and there are a ton of factors that can determine health and longevity.

Also, I'm not saying that we need to go out of our way to insult every fat person we see. I think that people need to not be afraid violating the codes of political correctness to hurt someone's feelings if they're heading down a bad path.

My supervisor at work is morbidly overwheight. If fat shame him, I'll get in serious trouble. It's unethical. And there's a difference between ethics and political correctness.

Yes I am a libertarian/conservatarian/classical liberal. I am not advocating that the government step in and tell us what we can and can't eat, nor would I ever trust the government to put us all on a diet. Spreading public awareness and transforming the culture can be done without the help of government.

Sorry I need to remind you once again to think before you post – the point I was making was that the whole health thing is a misdirection – I remember this person that was opposed to homosexuality and when fulled up on it he went into this whole spiel about being concerned about gay people’s health, that he wanted to protect them from their ‘unhealthy lifestyles’.

Which makes it clear once again that your viewpoint isn’t motivated by a concern for women’s health but your views on women’s appearance (with emphasis it seems on how they look when scantily dressed).

I don’t know is there ‘smoker shaming’ if anything it seems to me that smoking is seen as ‘cool’ as in the ‘bad boy’ image in a lot of media.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that you were advocating the government stepping in, but you do seem to be suggesting that society do it. For others. And that irks me. My issue isn't with big gubment telling people how to live, it's anyone telling people how to live. If the dude down the street wants to wash his Snickers and ice cream sandwiches down with a two liter Pepsi, that's his choice. And the consequences are his too.

I feel like people think that fat people are stupid. Like, we need to educate them before they eat themselves to death! I think people who are overweight know they're overweight, they know why they're overweight, and they accept that every time they sit down to a meal. And we should all accept it. They're not stupid; they just weighed risk with reward and made their own choice. And that's how any free society should work.

 

If such a hypothetical movement ever took root I would use the banned words as often as I could in order to annoy the thin skinned.
