Given that the 2014 census for the U.S. is not quite 319 million people, I think that number is highly suspect.

Now, if it said that over 300 million *GUNS* were owned in America, I'd have no trouble believing it. I personally own over 40 and I have plenty of friends who's collections make mine look puny by comparison.

I'm almost 60 and I've been carrying a gun since way before video games were invented, so I think that's an inordinate overstatement. I'm an NRA-certified instructor, a hunter, a firearms competitor, and a gun collector.

You suggest pepper spray, tasers, walking sticks, and/or a quarter staff as alternatives to carrying a firearm. Every single one of those items has the same major failing. They are require your opponent to be almost within arm's reach (or 35 feet, in the case of an air taser and about 25 feet in the case of pepper spray) before that can be engaged. Further, the hand weapons (walking sticks and quarter staffs) require extensive physical training to be used effectively.

A decent caliber handgun, OTOH, is useful to (potentially) 50 yards and requires substantially less training to become proficient. It grants you the advantage of being able to engage multiple targets at ranges that allow you to intimidate or neutralize them before they can come close enough to inflict harm. Further, if your attacker has a gun, wouldn't you want to be armed at least as well as them.

All in all, most suggestions and/or arguments for substituting other less effective items for guns as a means of personal defense just don't hold water.

you might consider thinking of the rest of the world as something other then your opponents.
yes i agree with the short comings of existing self defense technologies.
that's why we need to develop better non-lethal longer range ones.
that could be built into something as inconspicuous as a walking stick,
and the point of being non-leathal is to not have to be afraid to use them.

(n.r.a. kind of says it all. the public gunmakers lobby.)

I agree the number indicated does seem rather large, but once you take into account the current Alex Jones level of paranoia among the people that the government is trying to take away their guns – I wouldn’t be surprised if the number was accurate

I don't consider the rest of the world as my opponent. It's the single mugger/rapist/headcase that I plan to be prepared for.
Who's afraid? I don't want to kill anyone, but I don't want my loved ones or myself to be killed even more.

Don't say that to my wife. She's a firearms instructor and a competitor, just like me. She'd take exception to being told that guns are just a "man thing".

BTW, I watched the video. That guy may "like guns" but he doesn't know how to hold a handgun worth a shit. He's "cupping" every single one. If you're not familiar with that term, look it up here: http://mygunculture.com/8-shooting-tips-how-not-to-look-like-an-amateur-shooter/ Every single single tip listed there is spot on!

Just to play the devils advocate for a second......unless someone has a gun or some other potentially lethal projectile.....it's highly unlikely that they are an immediate threat to your life from 35 feet away. Nobody gets mugged or raped from that far away. Not making the case against guns (I've already said I enjoy shooting them) or saying that a 35 foot scenario can't happen. Just saying that most violence is up close and personal.

My bet is, your common street thug with a handgun couldn't hit the proverbial broad side of a barn at 35 yds much less 50.

At that range, you're better off just running away...preferably in a zig-zag pattern lol

Call BS all you want, kinda helps to know the two situations! One happened when I was younger and a bullet was jammed, not my weapon but tried to help, fired and ricochet off the ground. Hit the owner in the lower leg, pretty much a glance.

Second was a child molester that was running his mouth, threatened another mother, I knew his history and took my chance. Shot him in and blew off his nut sac! There were witnesses that were there that explained I had really no other options! That's the way it got wrote up and I never had to do anything but a deposition!

    Not 'badass' at all!
