One of Us Reveling in the limelight, Puffed up chest, larger than life, A more polite and diplomatic Patton, His alter-ego covered in shiny medals. Lost inside the spotlight of Crystal City, Fallen from grace, in Pentagon circles, Posing, for an underwear commercial. Never forget who you are fighting for! For that is the burden of command! And why George Washington, Was just another one of us. Who read his Bible every day, Got down on his knees for more than a second! And prayed for redemption of his sins. Anyone could walk right up to his front door, Be invited in for a cup of tea. Julius Caesar would tell his troops jokes, The night before going into battle. One of us only has meaning, If someone is actually listening. The Chinese and other countries, Refer to their army as "Their Army", And not hired thugs for sale around the world. They frequently jump into civilian trenches, And start digging along side their compatriots. Hoping to build a better future for the entire nation, Constructed on a solid foundation, that will last for generations. While, in the US, patriotism swings up and down with the stock market. Tea Party members, accuse each other of being commies, And, nobody, seems to have a clue who they are fighting for, But all roads lead to Rome along with all the imports in the world! The more goods they import the faster the money all floats to the top, "One of us" becomes "us and them", as the South attempts to rise again! When money does all the driving, none is steering, and nobody ever listens, As One of Us, becomes more indistinguishable every day, from Us and Them...
Life as a military brat gives you a different perspective. Geography tends to play a bigger role in politics than any ideology, which is what all our teachers neglected to mention in school. Either you can defend a territory or you can't and, today, we are taking geography into the information age and quantum mechanics, with our own technology catching up to our stunted senses of humor. Anarchists often say you have to be smarter than a chicken. Money is just another tool, when in the hands of people intent on improving the world and, of course, who recognize that they are just one of us. Juan Carlos of Spain, inherited the throne and, like Nelson Mandela, patiently prepared his entire life for his chance to lead his people back into the light of day again. He assumed control of Spain upon the death of Franco, the neo-Nazi dictator. A few years later, he had organized a democratic government and abdicated power. There are reasons some countries still have aristocracy, but they are all rooted in the needs of the people. It was his duty to his people, as one of us, and a symbol of hope, but he never wanted the job. George Washington also turned down the throne, and his birthday was celebrated in countries around the world. In the US, an amendment to the Constitution has been proposed that would regularly choose people by lottery to come up with a non-binding consensual statement on what they want their government to become. This is known as a "Wisdom Council", and has failed to gain any support, with over half the country insisting the government they call evil lie to them for their own protection. If there is no obvious hope left in American politics, its because it isn't politics anymore, and you might as well attempt to argue with a bull in rut. Which is why I'd rather laugh with the sinners, than cry with the saints.
