'Mondo' wins GOLD in Pole vault: Sweden's Armand "Mondo" Duplantis confirmed his status as the best pole vaulter in the world with a winning leap of 6.02 metres at Tokyo's National Stadium, as he claimed GOLD. The 21-year-old Duplantis was the only man to clear the height to land the title just a centimetre lower than the Olympic record Brazil's Thiago Braz set in Rio 2016. But Duplantis asked for the bar to be raised one centimetre higher than the world record he set in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2020. He came painstakingly close in his audacious attempt but could not scale the eye-watering height of 6.19m. Duplantis has been in superior form over the last two years, highlighted by his world-record leap of 6.18m. Christopher Nilsen produced a lifetime best of 5.97m to claim the SILVER medal, with defending champion Braz taking BRONZE scaling 5.87m.

Hashimoto is also the first Japanese since GUSHIKEN Koji (1984) to win two individual gold medals at the same Olympic Games. It was an error-filled final as all but the top three and Team USA's Brody Malone came off the bar. Malone, for his part, went the wrong way on a pirouetting element. Srbic's medal is the second won by a Croatian gymnast in Olympic history, while Nagornny's bronze marks a third medal in Tokyo after helping lead ROC to team gold and claiming bronze in the men's individual all-around final.

CHINESE GOLD: People's Republic of China's ZOU Jingyuan has re-established his dominance on the parallel bars, winning Olympic gold Tuesday (3 August) on the final day of artistic gymnastics competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Lukas Dauser of Germany was the SILVER medallist, while Turkey's Ferhat Arican won the BRONZE medal. Zou took the gold after scoring a massive 16.233, which is the highest score of any gymnast - male or female - at these Games. He has dominated the event in international competition, winning the world titles in 2017 and 2018. Italy break world record and win team pursuit GOLD: Italy broke their own world record to win Olympic gold in the men's team pursuit on Wednesday, beating world champions Denmark in a thrilling final at the Izu Velodrome. After breaking the world record yesterday during the heats, the Italian team clocked a blistering 3:42.032 in the GOLD medal race. It was the first time in 61 years Italy have secured gold in the event. The last time they were crowned Olympic champions was at Rome 1960 with their last time on the podium came at Mexico City 1968 (bronze). "It's a great honour for us. Our group has worked very hard to achieve at the highest level and starting in 2016 we were really motivated by our coach," Francesco Lamon said. Hannah Mills became the most successful female sailor in Olympic history: Hannah Mills became the most successful female sailor in Olympic history as she and Eilidh McIntyre won 470 gold at Tokyo 2020. They finished fifth in the medal race, but their earlier performances meant it was enough to hold off silver medallists Poland and France in bronze. Mills, one of Team GB's flag bearers at the opening ceremony, won gold in the class in Rio and silver at London 2012. GB have now won five sailing medals in Tokyo, three of which are gold. Trackside temperatures at the athletics stadium hit 40C earlier this week, and with the women's gold medal game due to take place at 11:00am local time - 2:00am BST - both sides have expressed concerns for player welfare at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium. 'I myself have been in contact with FIFA today and written to them, so that's about where the situation is today,' Marika Domanski-Lyfors, the head coach of the Swedish team, said. 'It is primarily about the players' health we're thinking about and trying to change the time of the game. 'There's a pretty big difference between playing in the afternoon or evening, and we are very much exposed to the warmth and heat. The Swedish Football Association said it had also written to IOC together with Canada to see if the game could be moved. 'If we have to play at 11 o'clock in the morning then we are prepared, but it would clearly be much better to for the performance and the game to have the possibility to play it later,' Domanski-Lyfors added. 'Canada have exactly the same opinion.'
