Hi, our first post so please excuse our ignorance. We're a married couple in our late 50's, both in well respected jobs who would be seriously frowned upon if we were found to be experimenting with recreational drugs. We are going to Amsterdam mid 2014 and would like to try, for the first time, a joint, or similar, in one of the coffee shops. Couple of questions though: 1. Given our age profile, are we likely to get ripped off? 2. We've never done anything like this so could we ask for the joint to be rolled for us, or is that just asking too much? 3. What should we ask for? 4. Roughly (ballpark figure), what should we expect to pay? 5. Anything we should watch for, e.g. getting mugged. pickpockets etc? 6. We're both committed ex smokers and afraid that smoking a joint would rekindle the memories of enjoying a cigarette. Would this experiment want us to take it up again? Looking at some of the posts here, we're sure you guys will have the answers. Thanks in advance.
first of all, congratulations on choosing one of the best places on the planet to take a holiday. I will attempt to give you a primer for your questions, and I'm sure you will find more answers trickling in: 1. Given our age profile, are we likely to get ripped off? Probably not, certainly not more than any other large city full of tourists and tourist traps. But, of course, it is possible. You must be cognizant at all times, even when stoned and pissed drunk. Keep your wits about you, there are always thieves, sheisters and pickpockets in large cities. A-dam is no dif. 2. We've never done anything like this so could we ask for the joint to be rolled for us, or is that just asking too much? Most coffee shoppes offer "pre-rolled" Joints, but they are usually not recommended (one never knows exactly what's rolled in them). HOWEVER, in your case, if you can't or won't roll your own, it may be best to research which shoppes offer the "best" pre-rolled J's for your enjoyment. B- there's always space cake, which is usually very fun to eat and lasts perhaps 4xs (?) as long as smoking. 3. What should we ask for? Pre-rolled Joint (pot or hash, whatever is your pleasure) 4. Probably not, unless you buy the pre-rolled with tobacco, then you could be in a sticky situation because you WILL be smoking tobacco and that could make you want to begin smoking again (?) IDK, cus I never smoked tobacco and am ignorant to it's addictive effects. My suggestion is to learn how to roll BEFORE you go, buy some good quality (most all of it is decent quality, you can't go wrong with the "cheaper" weed, it just won't be as strong as the more expensive stuff) WEED (grass not hash), and roll it yourself. You can do this in the coffee shop, right at the bar or a table (everyone is doing it), and smoke it. and fucking enjoy it!! another suggestion is to begin with some "less powerful" weed and work your way to the deep shit. if you smoke a whole joint of anything even just average stuff, you're apt to get pretty high. probably too high, and then not like it. try just having a few puffs in a pipe, or a bong. have a puff or two each and then sit back and enjoy. you can always have another, but it's quite easy to smoke more than you should between the time you light up and when you start to feel it, then it's too late. a pipe may not trigger the cigarette urge either.
You can get good advice in most coffeeshops. Just say you're not a regular toker and want to smoke a joint. A good shop has several kinds of weed and also several kinds of prerolled joints. Don't go for the space cake just because you can't roll a joint, it can be a total different effect and you could be massively stoned for hours. Even a strong weed joint is a better a idea cause you can lay it down when it hits you. Edibles generally hit you after at least half an hour all at once, so harder to dose correctly. If you're in touristy places with other people around you don't have to be afraid of being robbed but watching out for pickpockets seems a good idea in Amsterdam. A prerolled joint costs about 2 or 3 euro's I think. A gram is generally about €10.
yes, this is very good advice. And there are lots and lots of shoppes where you can buy a cheap pipe there to use on your trip (and then just toss before coming home--don't chance getting caught trying to import a used pipe, most assuredly ain't worth it), and most shoppes have bongs you can use (although not always recommended because you can get sick from an unclean bong!)
If they have waterpipes or bongs free to use they generally also have those disposabe mouthpieces for one time use.
Hi again. Many thanks for taking time to reply. Seems like it's not going to be problem being up front in the Shoppes and asking for help/advice. The idea of a pipe sounds interesting. We do have a friend here in the UK who smokes his own "roll ups" (tobacco) so we'll ask him if we can have a practice with his baccy and papers. I'm sure he'll ask the reason why, or perhaps he'll be discreet and work it out himself! I'll report back on our return next year. Thanks again..
