I try to avoid tv but sometimes I can't help it. I just saw a commercial for a car dealership where there was a country band in the parking lot of the dealership singing about how they shop for cars in freedom "under the red, white and blue" at this place....in real freedom. I shit you not. The next commercial was for a pizza place who made it a point to use the most heroic looking fire fighters to pitch their pizza. Like...slow motion...into the room...covered in soot...barely breathing and carrying your pizza!? Really? That pizza must be REALLY American!!!

I actually already know the answer to my question so instead of asking for some other answer....I'll ask you how and when you notice this shit. What pathetic shit do you notice the most? This is seriously some insulting bullshit to some of us and total validation to the dumbest motherfuckers in the US who unfortunately have been convinced to vote against their best interests every cycle.

What you just described is nothing compared to the patriotic commercialization leading up to this year’s Boston Marathon after last year’s terrorist attack and bombing [IMG]

i'm already sick of it and the marathon is still a month away :(

Well i am from Argentina so i can't tell you anything about the US but here what happens is that we have the "official" channels, which are from the gov, that broadcast a bright and beautiful country and how everything is golden... But reality is far away from that over here and it's kind of disrespectful when they show happy elders being thankful to them on their faked-smile propagandas -as ironically as it sounds- because you go out in the street and there are uneployed people on strikes, homeless people and families living on the streets and the elder people are the forgotten ones.

So it bothers me pretty much how they distortion everything, even the ads because they take it so over the top, they make the product seen like perfect for this or perfect for that and they are constantly creating (un)necessites.

    :)

I feel this way about pretty much everything I see on TV, which is why I almost never watch it. Once you understand the way people are manipulated by media, it's hard to watch television and get actual enjoyment out of it. I would say television is the predominate means by which people are fed the artificial reality most believe to be real and never question because it's all they've ever known. Television is nothing more than a propaganda tool. The more you distance yourself from it, the more you start thinking for yourself, so when you actually do watch it, you see just how blatant all the bullshit is.

I'm still bracing for the day I see a red white and blue bible being waved around a commercial or country music video.

There probably are ways that PR and I can disagree on things but I don't think this is one of them. We probably have more differences on delivery as opposed to substance. Delivery is not a point worth debating in many scenarios...imo.

Even though our flag is also red, white and blue, I am glad we don't have that kind of patriottism on tv here in the Netherlands.
That being said, every 2 years when either the World or European championship of football is commencing everything turns to our 'national color': orange. It's insane how people suddenly want to buy the same products, but with an orange touch to 'support the team'.

And here is the thing about patriotism... it only serves the people in control as long as there are wars against other nations to be fought. That is in fact the primary purpose of patriotism: to fuel wars by getting people to go off and fight for what they have been lead to believe is their country.

It's important to remember that the people in power at the very top of the ladder want a one-world government and currency. So while they still use patriotism and nationalism to get people to join up and be used as mercenaries to finish taking over the Middle East and its vast resources, they also simultaneously promote globalism, and one need look no further than the curriculum being taught in schools today, or some of rhetoric on CNN.

So while patriotism is bad, we must also be mindful of the globalist propaganda as well. To me, it seems like patiotism is to the right what globalism is to the left. Neither are good, and both will be pitted against each other to promote a dialectical synthesis or desired outcome by the people pulling the strings.

And regarding the supposed "American flag" ... that's not the true American flag. It's the United States flag. The United States is the corporation that was established in 1871. It's a corporate flag. The stripes in the American flag are vertical as opposed to horizontal. The red, white and blue comes from the flag of the British East India Company, which is why the British flag and so many other country's flags are also red, white and blue.

Over here in Europe they try to create a European spirit. Give Europe more power and fight for Europe. Well, fuck that. I won't ever fight for Europe because I don't give a fuck about Europe (this has become a bit more of an issue lately with the things going on in Ukraine).
I won't fight for my country either, because I don't give a fuck. I do, however, support our national football team. Just because entertainment.

Exactly... a lot of this globalism really started with the European Union, which is just one of the building blocks to a world government. Basically, the mantra is fork over your national sovereignty for the greater good of the whole, which in this case is Europe. Like I have said before, nationalism and patroitism are bullshit, because they get us into camps where we see things in terms of us vs. them, instead of understanding that we're all human and that wars are bullshit. It's basically just another religion to control people. But when you look at globalism, you see it's no solution, as it seeks to place greater control into fewer hands.

TV is a mirror of society, at large.

A lot of TV is a mirror of what's inside the heads of people who make TV.

I disagree that the left is responsible for pushing globalism, I think that the right is accomplishing that quite well with free trade laws and the like.

In Canada, we have a Prime Minister who has pushed an policy of aggressive nationalism. He made a big deal about the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, as well as putting up pictures of the Queen of England wherever he can. It is such a waste of money when there are real issues to address. How many schools can receive new books or renovations for the cost of running those pro-Canada television commercials and newspaper ads? It's ridiculous.

    Sigh... left/right

Anyway, tv as a whole IS some kind of mirror of society. And when we are so fully aware of what advertisements (and certain soaps and other programs where they show off brands) are trying to do that we make a principle out of it not to fall for that shit why should we still avoid all tv like the plague? I like to take notice of certain aspects this 'mirror' is showing us, distorted as the picture may be.

It's a bit strange to me that the people who apparently see right through all the temptations, mind tricks and subtlety are the ones who are the most scared to be influenced by it themselves :mickey:
