yeah but if you think making it in the art world is easy then why dont you do it? go and draw some squiggles see how far you get.

Go and look at David Hockneys work. A lot of people take issue with his montages and his acrylic paintings, then go see how he actually made a name for himself. Go look at his portraits he did as a student and you suddenly realise why David Hockney is rated amongst the all time greats in art. Always bear in mind that with an artist, its not so much a case that they make art the way they do, the hard part is realising how they were ever given the opportunity to make art the way they do. Look at those who have an exhibition at the tate, and usually you find they break the rules of art AFTER THEY FIRST LEARN THE RULES OF ART. They are usually gifted at more traditional forms of art before they start making the more avant garde stuff

Yeah there are so many pretentious artists out there, but in my opinion, true, good art is something that speaks to people in different ways, we can all interpret it however we feel and it should mean something to all of us :D Art should also mean something sentimental to the artist, of course. :D :D :D

    TRUE STORY:
I was at a gallery, let me remember which one now....... (5 minutes later) ah it was the National Gallery in Trafalgar square London. I went to an exhibition of abstract expressionism and it was utter absolute crap I mean dire. The paintings were hung in rooms that were too small for the volume of people there and I just got irritated with the work and irritated with overhearing really pretentious people elaborating to people over how significant the work was and it was crap. in the end I left feeling like abstract expressionism must all be crap. However, surprisingly, some time later I went to another gallery where there were fewer people and again it was abstract expressionism and this time the paintings werent so crowded together and it was a relief to look at them without having to fight my way to the front only to have someone stand in front of me.
I came away from that exhibition thinking that i had enjoyed the whole thing. So it depends how you see the work and you cant make a good judgement by seeing pictures in a book, you have to see the work itself in a gallery that treats the work with respect
