totally true, when you think to yourself about these things it just becomes clear after a while. some people wont listen to themselves, let alone listen to others. im sure more people would just sit down and think if they weren't so caught up in the rat's race of life.
Oh, I lived on a dairy farm for a long time so I absolutely understand. I had nothing but respect for our landlord, but even with his concern for his cows (and he really did care about them) the fact he was running a business with hundreds and hundreds of cows prevented things *most* people would consider a right from occuring. There was next to no vet care; it was not monetarily possible to treat the cow as the cows are set at a certain value. To spend more than the cow is worth would be a waste. Furthermore, in an effort to prevent epidemics any sick cow is left to die, or is euthanized. Infact, that was the only vet care they ever received. To be put down. It was a grace that he had a vet do it; many would have done it themselves in less than humane ways. There was a pond that had dead cows floating in it, on it was a thick layer of green slime and the bloated, dead cows. This was the burial ground, I'd walk by it holding my nose and gagging though I was endless fascinated by it. People would drop their cats off there, believing barn cats would be happy. Every single one of those cats had an infection of the eyes, and many had severe problems with their muscles and would twitch and contort continiously. Male calves were sold immediately, the female calves were kept in a separate area. I'd go play there because the babies were cute, but the amount of shit (literally) they lived in was appalling. Furthermore, dairy cows become hamburger. Cheap hamburger. Dollar menu hamburger. I live in Virginia and I can honestly say that I believe dairy cows are treated worse than cows meant for beef. I am not sure if this is because there is more regulation on meat cows than dairy cows, but I do know that most cows here have a large amount of pasture to graze on. However, a peaceful life does not mean death will come easily, or humanely. It most definitely does not. A friend of mine rented an apartment that was attached to an old slaughterhouse. Even before I knew what the building was, assuming it was simply a warehouse, the smell of death and the agony was apparent. The air was alive with death. Having lived on a dairy farm I had many close cow companions. One in particular, tagged 64 on her left ear, would visit me daily. I would stand on the fence to reach her forehead, and I would pet her endlessly. Her eyes were huge, and knowing. You can not tell me they don't feel, or know because I have seen.
wow I havent read all of this but am surprised at the conversations my original rant created! Simply put I think the meat industry is probablly one of the most disturbing greed driven inhumane industries out there! I mean good lord! Ive never lived on a dairy farm like some of you have, but Ive driven past them. You can smell it coming from miles away. The cows live in heaps of their own shit. Its obvious theyre miserable. So, not only are these poor animals being forced to live in inhumane conditions but theyre not being treated properly when sick and most of them are also being pumped full of hormones to promote milk production and thick meat on their bones. So, next time you drink a tall glass of cow milk...really think about where that came from. Its milk pumped out of some poor caged cows tit who is more than likely suffering from insane hormone injections and from standing up all day in a cage being milked. And...for those of you who eat cows....realize that your consuming the flesh of some poor miserable creature that was basically tortured his whole lifespan. Your eating that negative and miserable energy. Its not good for your soul or body. In regards to starving people keep in mind the saying...Live simply so that others may simply live. Living on your own slot of land and growing your own food is a wonderful thought and I know many folks who do that. But to me, that just sounds selfish as well. We as a human species have overpopulated this planet enough. There is so much space that is already cultivated...I think we need to stop expanding out to the damn countries and just be plenty happy with the cities and towns that weve already created.
you mentioned that shit smell you can smell for miles..that is polution..greenhouse gaasses..in fact the biggest poluting industry it may not be carcinogenic like many chemical and heavy metal toxins being oumped into our ecosystem but the fact is that cow farts and the methane released from cow shit has thye greattest potentionl to do devastating and irevfersablke harm to the environment i think partialy its the diets theyre fed in an attempt to increase bith milk and meat production that causes the gasses to be so extremekly bad not onmly are they pumped full of hormones but they add ground up cow to the feed.. cows are natural vegatarians adding any meat to theyre diets will wreak havoc on theyre systems but turning them into canibals, well thats just a crime against nature just a silly thought but..we are slowly changing the species. they mo longer can survive on theyre own because in our quest for higher production we bread them to never stop producing milk after theyre 1st pregnancy, so if they are not milked daily they will die now weve added ground up cowto theyre diets turning a vegatarianspecies slowly into a omnivore, and a canible too.. slowly evolution may change the species into a namneater..and that would be poetic justice when our hamburgers start to eat us you know..i cant wait to see that
Well, I am someone who is highly interested in homesteading. I am also a natural hermit. I believe it is easier to be ecologically aware in a city but I think it is absolutely feasible to be carbon free and on the land as well. I grew up in a very rural town and I can not imagine living in a city. I can imagine living in the woods, in a cob house or log cabin, growing my own vegetables and being some crazy mountain women the locals talk about. I would not be happy in a city, and I think I am far more ecologically aware than many people.
see...you grew up in a rural town. Thats the difference. Stay where you are most comfortable and happy. I live in a used -to- be rural area that is expanding exponentially due to all the fleeing city folk and its just bothersome. Theyre coming out here and buying 5-50 acres at a time so they can build their dream home and then what?......All that other space goes to waste. Cant tread on it, cant enjoy its beauty, cant use it to grow food for those in need...its wasted bought out space.
Yeah, I think its a huge problem when people rape areas and build large homes that are a waste of energy and resources. I believe smaller is usually always better. Where I am living now it's happening, and I'm sure it's happening where I grew up as well. Rich people have no concept of what they are doing, they see what they can have, and not what is already there. It is empty space to them, waiting to be used. I think we can live in harmony with nature, and I think I can build without blindly using resources.
yep...i think too many people have that mentality....they see what they can have and not what is already there. Its sad and as long as things keep going as they are it will never change...untill of course we have nothing left. If you can build without blindly using resources I say go for it! Spread the word as you do it too to educate as many as possible! My plan is to move to the city. Im tired of having to use my car so much! Next year my family and I are moving to Berkeley [San Francisco area] to make use of what is already there. I cant wait to get rid of my car and use only my bike and a BART pass!
Indeed ham is pig, but inregards to a 'hamburger' the name only originated from Hamburg, they use beef in burgers, which is from cows xP
