Sounds like OO is violent and just wants to fight with police.... but I could be wrong. Not that I think it's wrong to throw things at police, especially oakland police..... But there's a time and place.... and the cops probly lied anyway. Edit- That's not what the livestream looks like though......
THE NEWS IS LYING. I was at the Occupy Protest today (which is still going on.. I may go back but I had to do something at home) and we were peacefully marching through Oakland. Around 6:30PM we were marching down Telegraph and the police completely blocked in a few hundred of us from both sides of the street. Some people escaped by jumping the fence but then the police moved forward and I was trapped in. The news is trying to say we were trying to break into the YMCA building, which is a LIE. After being blocked in, the police chief told us that everyone was under arrest. At this point, people were standing infront of the YMCA and the doors opened up. Then some people ran inside to try to escape from the cops. Some of us remained outside and 100+ people were arrested. Luckily I, and the people I was with, were able to escape. The police were beating and arresting hundreds of innocent people, and not letting anyone escape, even those who were unaware of what was going on. Fuck the police,HELLA OCCUPY OAKLAND!
Before they blocked us in near the YMCA, they were flashbanging and tear gassing us with very little warning or chance to escape, and a woman was sent to the emergency room. While we were being blocked in, I tried to ask a police officer what was going on and he stuck his baton out at me and told me if I was smart I would back away. People were getting herded into a corner and arrested and beaten for peaceful assembly.
According to the livestream guy, there was a black bloc with a shield line throwing grease to disable the windows on police shields earlier....... That's not peaceful, it's a mirror of popo tactics. Just sayin'.
Not surprising being the Oakland police. They create many of the "riots" that happen in Oakland by going overboard and causing panic. Stand up to them and fight the good fight. If I wasn't stuck in Texas I would be there. They don't scare me. Bring industrial eye and ear protection. The police have an important job because there are many violent people out there in the world, but in this case: fuck the police. The streets are our Afghanistan now. This is a war we must win! What is at stake is our future as a country and our entire identity. I am more convinced than ever that I should join this fight. I am taking a train to California in a few months after I settle down here a bit and make some coin. We need to mobilize at a national level and congregate. California is the center of Federal interference over the will of the people and voters.
It's possible that someone threw something at the police, since I saw the anarchists doing that on Nov. 2nd, but I didn't see any violence from any protesters myself today. My main point was that the police are using their power to harm the people and the media is lying and not giving an accurate portrayal of what was going down. The media also always under-estimates how many people were there. They say 1,000 protestors when it seems more like 2,000+. JOURNALISTS are being arrested today who are trying to report the truth. At least two have already been arrested, including a journalist from SF. Anyone who does not have an Oakland Press pass. live stream of occupy oakland: http://www.ustream.tv/occupyoakland EDIT: the guy on the live stream is saying exactly what I was just saying! We were NOT trying to occupy the YMCA, people were trying to escape the dozens of cops in riot gear who were threatening everybody.
You should probably educate yourself a bit better on Oakland police tactics. This does bring out some violent people but it's the distrust of the police and their quickness to use violent tactics that starts that quid pro quo. We have the right to fight tyranny. However almost all of the protesting is, in fact, peaceful. Judging by your past posts RooRshack, you seem to take the side of devil's advocate. That is fine but it also makes you look like a fool.
Have you seen today's press release? OPD is claiming Occupy attacked them with IEDs. Talk about bullshit! OPD Press Release
This is what RT has to say about Saturday, Jan 28, in Oakland https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtKHGDN8KPs"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtKHGDN8KPs and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WEK6HgXBsQ"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WEK6HgXBsQ
I watched this on TV last night and saw how the police started the violence with the tear gas and percussion grenades (see second video in arieanne's post above). I see Oakland's mayor is far more interested in protecting businesses than protecting the right of the PEOPLE to protest. They should be giving them a building they can use for their activities. It's a CIVIL courtesy that any city should provide its citizens. Instead they waste MILLIONS chasing and attacking protesters around the city. What a waste of resources!
I know alll about OPD. This is kiddie shit, they haven't even lethally shot any unarmed, subdued, face-down minorities in the back yet, this time. It doesn't matter, this is a propaganda war, and protesters taking the bait legitimizes, in the eyes of many and regardless of the truth, anything the police do. if you throw a rock, it's "IEDs", plural, and half of your own 99% will stand behind the police when they break out the real lead. It's not tit-for-tat, this is not an armed conflict and the second it turns into one all is lost. It's easy to get riled up by injustice, ti's good that you feel strongly, and there is a place for all manner of resistance techniques, but this is not the place for violence. And I was watching the stream, protestors seemed to, for the most part, conduct themselves admirably, while police acted violent, and really, rather silly. But the world doesn't see that, they see videos of police sting-bombs that say protesters used IED's, and think weather underground shit. As for your last paragraph, no, I simply make up my own mind, instead of blindly following either "side", whereas you let OPD's actions determine your opinions........ so which "side" are you on?
City Hall is still doing City Hallish types o' things for example, policy making--their 9 to 5 hasn't been shaken up anymore than a colliseum is when Metallica is playing the following morning and groupies are sleeping out front waiting to get in 1st. Perhaps the mayor and other officials had to tippy-toe over a few dozen in an Occupy denizen but the city's wheels are still in motion. The yippies had it right: the sword IS mightier than the quill. Statement after statement and nada has changed; since they're being attacked with tear gas, they'd be wise to catch on and look to Toronto's G4 Summit or Seattle's similar activism surrounding issues of that sort. They need to follow the laws pf physics loosely and apply "every action has an equal and opposite reaction", figure out which is which. I imagine gas masks, gloves, aprons, & neon yellow paint could be one invasive but one temporary option. Hell ~*THEY*~ could add hard rubber dinosaurs to a bunch of bottle rockets' payloads and fight fire with fire. At the least Occupy Oakland leaders ought to watch a few seasons of Mythbusters, lulz, at least they'd know what hypothetical reactions would work... What a jumbled mess
Like I just finished stating: Fight fire with dirty bombs, per se. Go beyond piggies' tactics and be a heartfelt patriot and rebel. Violence is all those jackoes know apparently.
The Mayor, Jean Quan, who was herself an activist when she was younger but apparently has forgotten what it's like to stand up for what you believe in, has given police total power to do whatever they want to the protestors and says it's time for occupy to "stop using Oakland as it's playground". Howabout it's time for the OPD to stop using the citizens as it's punching bag??? Sore & coughing today from the tear gas, glad that's all that happened to me and that people for the most part are safe. 300+ arrests, many won't be let out til Monday when courts open up again. Quote from a journalstar article: "In a news release Sunday, the Occupy Oakland Media Committee criticized the police conduct, saying that most of the arrests were made illegally because police failed to allow protesters to disperse. "Contrary to their own policy, the OPD gave no option of leaving or instruction on how to depart. These arrests are completely illegal, and this will probably result in another class action lawsuit against the OPD, who have already cost Oakland $58 million in lawsuits over the past 10 years," the release said."
