The militarization of local police when it comes to things like drug raids or even routine searches has rightfully received much media attention and condemnation from the public, particularly when it comes to terrible stories like the police officer in Texas who shot Cisco the dog without reason.

But the same level of condemnation isn’t present when a four-generation family has its home raided in the dead of night as though local police discovered a drug cartel in the basement.

Occupy Atlanta Dumps Evicted Household's Items On Sheriff's Lawn

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -
Members of Occupy Atlanta protested a family's eviction by tossing personal items onto the lawn of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office on Monday.

Christine Frazer, her 85-year-old mother and 3-year-old grandson were evicted from their Decatur home last week in the middle of the night.

"DeKalb County sheriff showed up at my home at 3 a.m. in the morning. They used a locksmith to drill off the locks, kicked in my door came in my house," said Christine.

Sheriff Thomas Brown they followed through with the eviction after giving the family ample time to negotiate with the banks. Brown said they chose to do it in the middle of the night to avoid a confrontation with Occupy Atlanta members who had been camped out on the lawn.

Protesting that eviction, Occupy members threw the Frazer's belongings on the doorstep of the sheriff's office. The sheriff didn't interrupt.

"If I'm the guy that's the scapegoat, then fine. Don't tear up my building, don't tear up my cars. Don't hurt my deputies, don't interfere with free movement of the public and you're not going to have a problem with me," said Brown.

But after the protesters left the sheriff's office, deputies surrounded the vehicle of one of the Occupy members, impounded the car, arrested one man and issued one citation on the scene.

"Four cop cars were behind me with their sirens on," said Leila Abadir, who received a citation for littering.

The sheriff's office says the van was impounded because it could be used as evidence in the littering charge.

The man who was arrested was cited for littering and disorderly conduct. He was taken to the sheriff's office because he did not have identification on him.

Sheriff Thomas Brown Has No Remorse Over 3am Eviction Of Senior Citizens

Last week, after much negative press, Sheriff Thomas Brown reached out to several organizers and asked what he could do to de-escalate the conflict between Occupy Atlanta, Chris Frazer, and his office. Sheriff Brown offered to accept a people's citation from the community, face Chris Frazer face to face and apologize for the pain he caused her, and contribute to her legal fees as she continues to fight Investors One Corporation.

With some skepticism, Chris Frazer agreed. As an organizer working with Chris, I was honestly excited to de-escalate with the Sheriff's office, as it feels like our energy really should be focused on the extremely shady Investors One Corporation.

Things did not play out the way any of us expected. Joe Beasley, Attorney Joshua Davis, Chris Frazer, and myself were allowed to meet with the Sheriff in his lobby while around 30 others watched from outside the glass walls. Sheriff Brown's face had no signs of reconciliation on it.

The first sign that he was backing down on his word was that he refused any media admittance to the meeting, which we had agreed he would allow. The Sheriff began to attempt to apologize, but it appeared that he just couldn't resist sharing his true remorseless feelings. At one point, as Chris Frazer had begun to weep, Sheriff Brown simply stated, "If I had to do it over again, with all the information I have now, I wouldn't have done anything differently".

I heard them say every-other-Tuesday during the March. It seems next Tuesday will be a planning meeting and the following Tuesday will be a March; and that pattern carries through, evidently.

On October 7th, 2011 in downtown Atlanta, people of all backgrounds assembled peacefully in a public park to petition our government for a redress of grievances. In less than a month, we were violently evicted and many of us were thrown in jail.

Over the course of the following year, a lot has happened. We worked with families in danger of eviction who now live peacefully in their homes without fear of midnight police raids, we worked with unions to save hundreds of jobs, and we built gardens and communities for ourselves.

Not every battle was a victory, however. There have been divisions and personal battles. Friendships have been broken and relationships have dissolved. We have wrestled with the demons of oppression within our own souls.

But through it all we are still kicking. We are still fighting for what is right and we will never give up until we have won. No matter what group we now consider ourselves aligned with, we share the experience of freedom and solidarity that we felt at Troy Davis Park.

This year on October 7, let's throw a party that will be remembered. Let's show Atlanta that there is no force on heaven or earth as powerful as an idea whose time has come. That the eviction wasn't the end of the Occupation, it was the beginning of something even bigger. Let's show them that we are still here, that we are still strong, and that another world is possible.

This is some of what the energy from Occupy Atlanta has achieved. After Occupiers were driven out of the park, they worked to save families' homes. This home has been saved from foreclosure due to the diligence of Occupy Our Homes Atlanta.

Some of you already know much of my story- how I reached out to the Occupy Our Homes Atlanta in desperation, literally when all hope seemed lost. Despondent after a representative with Wells-Fargo refused to consider my loan modification, and with less than 24 hours before my home was to be auctioned as a foreclosure, I called Allie with Occupy Our Homes, Atlanta, and I was immediately amazed and heartened by the response- OOHA mobilized several people, none who knew me, who stood with me on the courthouse steps, showing potential buyers that buying my home would come with, well, "problems!" The support brought real tears to my eyes, and the results that day- no one bid on my home!- would prove to be just the tip of the spear.

Over the next several months, OOHA would organize on-the-ground protest actions at Wells-Fargo branches, and even at the Atlanta Regional Fannie-Mae office, have over 1,400 people sign an on-line petition, many who don't know me personally but heard my story and recognized in it a similar plight their family members or friends were facing, and organized call-in drives to Wells Fargo. My spirits sagged, several times- but OOHA kept at it, as if they knew something I dared not believe. Those actions made the powers that be at Wells-Fargo and Fannie Mae realize that the Occupy Movement, far from being "no longer relevant" as some misguided people had been lead to believe, is a force to be reckoned with. We- and that includes YOU- have achieved the almost unheard-of feat of having Wells-Fargo and Fannie-Mae approve a loan modification well AFTER the foreclosure sale.

BANK OF AMERICA: RESCIND THE FORECLOSURE AND KEEP MILDRED IN HER HOME!
TO: BRIAN T. MOYNIHAN, CEO OF BANK OF AMERICA

This home belongs to Mildred Garrison-Obi. In 2009 she was foreclosed on after becoming disabled and was evicted in November 2012. Since then the home has been sitting empty and Ms. Obi, a disabled senior citizen, has become homeless.

Community members, Occupy Our Homes Atlanta, and Ms. Obi have taken back her home and taken a step towards ending homelessness. This house is now meeting a direct need instead of sitting empty and inviting crime. Ms. Obi needs this home for shelter far more than Stone Mountain needs a home to sit empty.

Do what's morally right and allow Mildred to stay in her home where she belongs. Rescind the foreclosure, and give back the home at 1047 Park Gate Place in Stone Mountain, Ga!
Why is this important?

Mildred Garrison-Obi, or Obi as many of her friends call her, was evicted from her home by force last November. After the eviction, Mildred was left with nowhere to go, sleeping on friends couches, or renting a room at the local extended stay hotel. She began attending weekly meetings held by Occupy Our Homes Atlanta, and after helping to move a young homeless family into a bank owned home in December, Mildred was inspired to keep fighting and take her own home back from the bank.

She bought the house in 1998 for just over $70,000 with a mortgage from Countrywide. In 2008, after the financial crisis caused the economy to collapse, Mildred lost her job and fell behind on her payments. As a senior in her 60s, she became disabled, and found it increasingly difficult to find employment. When the bills started to pile up, she contacted Bank of America, who had acquired Countrywide earlier that year and now serviced her loan. In August of 2009, despite her best efforts to work out a modification with them, Bank of America sold her home on the Dekalb County courthouse steps.

It was only after the foreclosure that Mildred realized her loan was part of a securitized trust overseen by US Bank. As was the case in most foreclosures filed in 2009, the documents used to take her home were fraudulent and robo-signed. For years she fought to have the foreclosure rescinded, going back and forth between Bank of America and US Bank, who both refused to claim responsibility.

Mildred, along with her neighbors and community members has moved back into her home. After opening the door to her house that had been sitting vacant for months, she triumphantly shouted, "I'm not homeless anymore." Please sign her petition and demand that Bank of America make that a permanent reality, and give Mildred's home back to her for good.

"As you well know, our government is no longer beholden to answer to the people. Every level of government is vulnerable to auction to the highest bidder. This is a product of plutocracy in government.

Georgia's Public Service Commission recently voted 4-1 to expand solar energy in the state of Georgia. The only person who voted against the plan was Republican Stan Wise.

After a little research, we discovered that Stan Wise has received over 90% of his campaign funding over the last 10 years from CEO and board members associated with coal, gas, and nuclear energy. (the same industries his organization is supposed to regulate.)

This is a blatant example of what really fuels our political system. Stan Wise is a lapdog for the 1% and for that reason, we have turned his bright, shining face into our newest meme.
