many thanks my friend. ya know we are secretly pulling for you to cross over ;P before the server crash, we had a member who would get all kinds of high holy about "if you eat any fish you will never be vegetarian." dreadful bore she was. we also try to pretend Atkins is a bad dream!
ya, uh, not to be an ass or anything, but boasting about how long youve been veg is "holier than thou"ish also. it doesnt matter how long, it matters how much youve grown, and matured with it, just like any other belief or lifestyle, time shoudln't be a factor, it doesnt even matter if you are or arent, shouldnt rub it in other peopels faces either way. no disrespect, just my humble opinion.
It's only mentioned when someone asks (lots of those threads) and when its needed to point out that I'm not a PETA convert from the last Bonaroo or whatever. the longer one lives this way the more tidbits of "how to do it" get picked up. A driver of five years is more adept than a kid with a paper license. It's practice.
What is wrong with talking about veganism exactly? Why do people talk at all? If someone says "Oh yeah, I'm a vegan," I think I'd reply "Oh that's cool," and have a convo about it. But thats just me. I am fairly sociable. I mean if people don't talk about anything, where would our world be? If merely telling people you are vegan is wrong, then one who tells someone that they are homosexual, a Christian, or something to the affect would just be spouting off? What is wrong with having self pride and self worth?
SheShutYourEyes certainly makes a good point... Though, have you ever tried asking this person why they went vegan? If you haven't maybe you should... you just never know. Maybe they didn't go on about why they are vegan for the exact reason of not trying to shove any beliefs onto anyone. *shrugs*
And going off of Apples+Oranjes' post... Did she even talk to you about veganism? If shes not talking directly to you and bragging about it, why did you even post this? Just because you don't choose to annnounce your veganism to people doesn't make this girl wrong in what shes doing. Shes vegan and wants to tell people about it. So what? She doesnt seem to be running around screaming I'm VEGAN and YOU SUCK. or the like.
some people who don't eat meat believe that meat is murder. now, you've gotta ask yourself what it means to believe that. not just killing, but murder. if you honestly believe that meat is murder, you would be morally obligated to speak up about it. surely, if you were served human flesh, you would speak up, because that is murder, so why not speak up when a cow is served? if the table was filled with human ribs and baby-gravy, how would you react? if it is murder to kill an animal for meat, this idea can also apply to products, like leather. how would you react if you found out your soap was made of human fat, or the coat you love so much is made of human skin? one would probably be consumed by this moral wrong. so how can one who truly believes that meat is murder sit silently at a dinner table? i don't know how i really feel about all of that, but i figured it would be worth mentioning since it's a different perspective from what's already been mentioned. of course, not all of those who speak incessantly about their beliefs truly feel that meat is murder, and not all those who claim that meat is murder truly believe it. those who do it for the trend and the hype won't last, and they'll just look silly to those they preached to after giving up their veg habits. i think the way one talks about their veggie-ness is more important than the frequency.. many people discuss it frequently, but they have a different understanding of what it means to go veg. maybe those who seem to do it for the hype talk about it incessantly, because they are still trying to convince themselves. maybe they aren't in it for the hype at all... maybe they really believe they should not eat meat, but bring it up all the time because they want to remember why they feel that way, and are searching for greater depths... and by talking to you about it all the time, they might be looking for some sort of deeper understanding/insight from someone with more experience.
lawngirl you made some extremely good points... Back when I first decided to make the transition, it was hard for me to not talk about it, because I needed some extra motivation and a constant reminder why I don't believe in eating animal corpses. Now, I've been veggie for a while and recently decided I wanted to take it further and go vegan about 3 months ago, and I find myself talking about it a bit more again, for one because I'm learning so much and I just find it amazing... I've always been that way; I was the kind of kid who came home from school and had to tell my parents everything interesting that I learned that day. On another note, when I meet someone that's veggie or vegan, I always get a bit excited about it, because around here veggies are an extreme minority... I don't know, I guess my point is, usually I don't even ask why they went veg because it's just so nice to meet someone you can relate to on a certain level like that. To me, it doesn't really matter why someone decided to go veggie or vegan, because it's still good to know that they are helping themselves [in terms of health], and the animals by choosing not to eat them. But that's just my opinion -
Hmm, that sounds sketchy...but, maybe they really believe it's wrong, and they're just having willpower struggles. When you, yourself feel so strongly about this particular subject I can only imagine how annoying it is to witness that... It makes them sound more or less, really hypocritical. Going back to what I said in the first sentence... If it's something they really believe in, maybe sooner or later they will find it in themselves to ACTUALLY go veggie and stay that way. Not everyone has a strong sort of willpower, and maybe that's all they need The majority of people are raised eating meat and other animal products, and changing that takes a lot of work; it's difficult to change something you were brought up with. I don't know about you but when I first went veggie, sometimes it was extremely difficult for me to resist something that I was brought up on... Whatever it is, it can be annoying to hear about/see but everyone has their own reasons for doing what they do. And we'll never understand everyone and the way they think.
Lawngirl, you're dead right. Anyone who says 'meat is murder' doesn't know what they're saying. It's just a stupid catchphrase that PETA morons like to shout. I shouldn't think that anyone would actually try to argue that it's a valid statement. It's just like the "make poverty history" bollocks that's been doing the rounds over here; no-one really beleives it, it's just a good catch-all soundbite. Sad that so many people can't digest real argument, and just live on stupid catchy sayings instead.
I wish I could talk about it with someone, only here I can express myself! The thing is that I don't have any veggie friends, all my friends are meat-eaters and they believe going veggie is just insane, so I prefer not to talk about this things with them. When they found out that I had become a vegetarian they just said that it was a stupid thing to do, I explained why I had decided it and why I thought it was the right thing to do, but they just didn't get it. So, you see, I prefer not to talk about these things with them because they don't respect what I believe, and they think it is just a phase I'm going through. Everytime they bring the subject up, I calmly explain once again what I believe and why I believe it, but I'm almost sure they will never understand it... Anyway, they will soon get used to it and I hope they will stop trying to make me eat meat again. So, I just wanted to thank you all for being here and making it possible for me to speak about this subject...
aww clover...aren't there any organizations or anything in your area that you could get involved with [animal rights activists and such] where you could meet people that you could relate to? Well, none the less, I'm glad we can be here for ya
I've already contacted the only vegetarian organization I know of in Uruguay, but, like must thing in this country, it is not active. Anyway, I still have faith...
I think we're allowed to in a Vegetarian thread The only time I bring up anything to do with being Vegan is to inform people occasionally of things they don't know like pointing out that a particular food has pig fat in it, if I was offered it or something! I hate having to jusify to people why I do it, its annoying and you never win those damn non-veggies always think they know best!
