I am in favour of land tax because (1) It reflects the local economic activity (2) Publicly funded infrastructure improves the value of real estate. Land tax is a way of giving something back. An example would be in greater Melbourne, the extension of the Epping line to Mernda. Land values would have increased as such along the new section of the line. (3) The rich cannot get out of paying it.(4) Multi-national companies would pay more tax.(5) Any new public infrastructure that - resulted in decreased land value would lead to lower land tax - a form of compensation.(6)Encourages the best use of land. (7) Discourages land speculators.
