First of all, you have no right to tell people what religion/philosophy they belong to. Second; ou don't have to be Rastafari to have dreads, do you live under a rock or something? Third; music is not limited to race! What the hell are you thinking? We didn't "steal" anything! God, people like you really piss me off...

its people like you who say things like "let THEM have it" that make race differences a continuing problem in society.

:D Some woman in line in the the grocery store was kind enough to tell me what she thought of white guys with dreads (I'm not completely white but she wasn't completely bright).

I was going to tell her what I thought of people who give unsolicited opinions but then when I looked at her and her rolls of celulite pouring out of her spandex
jogging pants I just laughed and told her" That's Ok maam, you're not exactly the kind of woman i was trying to impress".

and while we're at it i guess we should tell black people to give us back having paying jobs. y'know it was ours before they were set free from slavery. or then again we could just tell them to give us back suits and ties. and why don't white people give back blues and jazz while we're at it.

see how stupid it sounds when you try to separate races that way. please note that i was being completely saracstic in the above paragraph. you need to not tell people what to do man, and you also need to understand that it's because of this separation of styles etc that makes it so hard for races to unite.

I'm glad to see that Poopship is at least considerate enough to sit down and read our posts and not run off after seeing all the opposition. The anger is obvious for you, Poop, I think you need to let it out somehow. :)

Dreadlocks are a symbol of Black/African pride and resistance to white supremacist beauty standards and are rooted in Black/African struggles for survival and liberation. Dreadlocks are rooted in Rastafarianism, a pan-African spiritual/religious movement for healing and decolonization for Africa and African people worldwide. Rastafarianism is a form of resistance to a history of white racism, slavery, colonization and genocide. The traditions of people of color/non-white people are still under attack across the planet. Appropriating our traditions and ways of dressing/presenting is a further attack on our communities. Wearing dreadlocks plays into a racist society that believes people of color and our lands, bodies, cultures and spirits are up for grabs. Appropriating other cultures means you neglect looking at your own ethnic roots and traditions. By wearing dreadlocks, white people demonstrate they are unaware of anti-racist struggles and deteriorate trust between white and people of color/non-white people. Being an anti-racist white person is counter-culture. Trying to present a counter-cultural image by appropriating other cultures is not.

The struggle against racism is more than just not saying racist comments or knowing that the United States was built by slave labor. It is also a struggle to recognize and understand the ways racism/white supremacy are woven into every aspect of life. One of the ways racism plays out which is often ignored or not seen by white people is through appropriation, “the act of taking or making use of without authority or right.” Appropriation ignores the lives and struggles of oppressed communities, and instead takes what is seen as interesting, useful or beautiful, disregarding our cultures and lives. In the US and other countries, appropriation is part of long histories of racism and genocide. Colonial governments and peoples appropriated the homelands of First Nations/Native people. Europeans appropriated the bodies and labor of African peoples during slavery. While our bodies, homelands and labor continue to be appropriated, so do our cultural symbols/lifeways. The New Age movement, for example, appropriates (and twists) the spiritual practices of First Nations, Asian, African and other cultures. Among progressive/radical white people, the problem of appropriation continues to damage communities of color. Dreadlocks worn by non-African people is one form of appropriation that often goes unnoticed and unchallenged and is often misunderstood. Healing the legacy and current reality of racism and colonization means looking closely at the ways we perpetuate these forms of violence. It means, in part, letting go of cultural symbols that are appropriated from people of color/non-white people and instead looking deeply at the complex issues that surround race and racism.

    Hey Poop,
In a way I think you're right. Dreads don't usually look good on caucasians. Your also right that some dreads originated from the rasta culture. But that's not the only place they started. Before rasta was even around the ancient Egyptians wore dreads and I might add that those were some badass dreads the pharoahs were sporting. Egytians I might add are not black. In fact the paler your skin was in those times the more desirable you were. I for one couldn't care less whether not somone has dreads. I don't look at some white boy and think, " look at the dumbass with dreads." I have a huge variety of friends. Some have dreads, some are bald, some have fros. All-in-all who cares, I for one make friends because of peoples personalities. Someone prejudice against something as stupid as dreads is not likely to be found among my group of friends. It's all about loving not hair. - Peace

hair is hair. if someone's gonna get all anal about hairstyles, then they need to take something for that. it's unreasonable. quit getting shitty about what someone else has on their fucking head, okay? suddenly it's gonna be totally unacceptable for punks to have mowhawks because it was a tribal american hairstyle. fucking lame.

and you know, these beautiful people here with dreads are making the same statement against beauty standards within the white race. moonshyne, pink_floyd, sprout, fleassy, they're all freaking gorgeous, and they all have dreads. i dont' even like dreads much, but i have to admit, these guys look fucking awesome.

This is mainly for the original poster, although this could apply to anyone that doesn't like something that someone else does or something someone else looks like. Maybe instead of "assuming" someone is a certain way, you should ask why they do certain things or look a certain way.

And as far as you not liking dreads on "white people", that's your own personal opinion. I'm not sure why you posted this thread in the first place. Like you, no matter what anyone says, no one is going to change the way they feel about things just because *YOU* or anyone else doesn't like it.

So the question remains...WHY did you start this thread?

It was pretty obvious before I even read the replies that you were gonna get flamed...

*gives kc a sloppy wet kiss on the.......................cheek*

Thanks, but I'm lock free. :p You need to look at my gallery a little more! ;)

    Now for Mr. poop:
Anyway, I just stopped back by to also point out that most of the time whenever there's an issue with sprout's dreads, it usually comes from white people. The black folks love them, especially the ladies. We can't even go to a grocery store without the girlies asking about his locks and wanting to touch them. I've had several people ask me to dread their hair for them. So, apparently the majority of black people don't mind us whitey's having dreads, but this little honky is trying to speak for them.

And dude, in your post you wrote "Dreadlocks are rooted in Rastafarianism,"

It's already been pointed out to you that dreadlocks have existed for thousands of years, before anyone ever even thought of rastafarianism. Dreads were added to it, but were not created by that religion. But, I guess it's useless pointing that out (yet again) to you.
