So, only Christians should be able to celebrate the holiday they stole from the Pagans? Makes sense...
i will modify and expand my earlier stated misgivings re xmas to include all holidays everything should be open and functional 365 days a year, workers should get reasonable vacation leave and holidays [holy days] should be illegal re that separation of church and state thingie
Seeing as Christmas is not a Christian celebration, why shouldn't non-Christians celebrate they’re own Holiday?
so on december 25 all non-christians should celebrate 'no historical proof of jesus existence day' around here that means we get a 'no jesus' parade, and a billboard on the road into town woo hoo!
I do it for the kids. I believe kids should believe in imaginary things like Santa, easter bunny, Jesus, and God. I believed in all those things once upon a magical time. Plus any excuse to not go to my miserable job is fine with me, praise Jesus! Some may celebrate Jesus, the imaginary supernatural creature. I celebrate Yeshua or Yay-soos as I like to call him, the "fuck your establishment" human rebel.
Christianity stole everything from Pagan religions. If Christians are alowed to steal holiadys from Pagans, Atheists are alowed to steal holidays from Christians.
Stole has such a negative connotation. Incorporated should be more correct. Also "everything" is so absolute. It's better to say: Some pre-Christian traditions were incorporated into regional Christian worship and belief.
Who cares! If you want Christmas to be a religious holiday or if you want it to be something different or nothing at all so be it. For me it is an excuse to eat alot, drink alot, and be with family. and of course watch the Christmas Story over and over again.
i am seriously allergic to christmas music it is a life-threatening condition, and makes public spaces very dangerous for me after thanksgiving i become a virtual shut-in for a month or so you can laugh, but you don't have to live with it
As an atheist, I don't celebrate Christsumerismas. I personally tell everyone I know who would be inclined to buy me something for Christsumerismas to give a donation to their favorite charity instead. In exchange, I will do the same for them. Most everyone I know is Christian including most members of my family and my wife's family. Most know I'm atheist and respect my feelings on Christsumerismas and they do give to a charity. Everyone who I use to buy for (before becoming an atheist) now gets a $50 donation made to the American Red Cross as an "honor" donation made in their name. They will receive a Holiday card in the mail from the ARC. As for the kids of all the people I know, they still get regular Christsumerismas gifts (toys) because I remember this as a very magical time in my life when I was a kid and there is no reason to deprive them of this. When they turn 18, they get donations made in their name as well. I find it rather odd that you would complain about non-christians celebrating Christsumerismas considering it was the Christians who stole Saturnalia/Winter Solstice celebrations from the Pagans. I also find it odd considering that Christsumerismas isn't the only holiday celebrated this time of year. There is a reason why its been changed to the "Hoilday Season" instead of the "Christmas Season".... there are other people with other holidays. "Holiday Season" covers everyone and isn't suppose to offend anyone, but for some odd reason it seems to offend some people who think this is THEIR time of year only. They feel they've lost their "privileged" status and feel they must voice their opinions about it.
Indeed. It reminds me of an article I read the other day, where a public school was having "Diversity Week" and a student put together a presentation on her religion (Wicca). When Christian parents got wind of the presentation they made a big stink about it to the board of directors, claiming that the presentation would be "inappropriate".
rudie, you can quote the old man of the mountains til yer blue in the face but i fear you may you may never feel him i'm having fun on this side, i'll have fun on the other, and probably any other as well [not taking sides]
Santa Claus = Sinterklass = St Nicholas (of Myra). Kris Kringle = Christkindl = Christkind. Santa can be easily traced back to St Nicholas or Christ. Not saying that the figure is completely without pre-Christian influence, but he is not entirely pre-Christian either. I think it is interesting when people say definitively that Jesus was born on a certain date.
