What is interesting is if you look at "view all posts" under Stevs profile. Nearly all his posts contain flames. He is either calling somebody an asshole, a fucking idiot, or telling somebody to shove something up their ass. I thought the CPI was an objective measurement tool based on a fixed basket of goods. So you are saying when an item is priced so high that people stop purchasing it we stop measuring that item and use a cheaper substitute to make your predictions on prosperity. It appears that basket is no longer really fixed.

-its only for products that can be substituted in the short term, say if we find a new source of energy, and the price of oil is 1000$ a barrel, people will flock to the new source if its cheap, say the price of oil still remains high, but not many people are using it, it would boost inflation if it was still weighted the same even though most people didn't even rely on it or pay for it

-there are a few types of cpi, cpi-u which is the one we were talking about, without the substitution effect measured in, it just measures expenditures by urban consumers, and c-cpi-u which tries to measure the substitution effect

the cpi is fixed- execpt when there is a major new item that has a large impact on people's lives they would put that in(dont think it happens very often) the way they measure the sub effect is by increasing or decreasing the weighting of the item(for example gas prices are going to be weighted more heavily than the price of candy) ( or if people just stop buying the product over several years it could be dropped i guess because it would no longer be relevant)
