i would have to disagree with disarm's statement that belief doesn't matter, since it's self-evident to believers that belief does matter. few people have respect for that truth, and therefore get into nasty fights. to the believer in question, respect is required if you want to learn or discuss anything with them.

Whether you believe in God or not does not matter so much, whether you believe in Buddha or not does not matter so much. You must lead a good life. -His Holiness the Dalai Lama
What mynameiskc was saying, blackguard, is that to one who believes in something, their belief is important and very valuable, it is dear to them. We must therefore have respect for that belief and for th sentiments of the people we are speaking to.
well, i think the best questioning i've ever received from a non-christian was from nathan something or other. curious, non-judgemental, just wanting to know. it was really easy to talk to him. i'd answer whatever question he had, because he had respect for the fact that i held a belief. so, for people who actually wanna learn or discuss something, instead of someone who just needs to lash out, having respect for the belief of the persom you're speaking with is essential to any real discussion.
Exactly kc...There are a couple of truly wonderful threads in the Hinduism forum started by The Dauer. It gave me great joy to participate in those discussions, because he was there out of curiosity, not out of a desire to change or convert, but a genuine wish to understand our way of thought.
It's a silly thing to say but I'll say it anyway: God (or the laws of the universe if you are an atheist) gave rise to atheists and theists alike (and all the categories I left out). If we recognize this simple fact we can look at people in a fair manner- they come from the exact same source as we did- although they are different.
That was what I thought she meant. I not only respect it, I accept it as being true, and real, and just as valid as my own.
‘Treat the other man's faith gently; it is all he has to believe with. His mind was created for his own thoughts, not yours or mine.‘ Henry S.
