Jeezus, some of you guys have the biggest chips on your shoulder about grunge I've ever seen. So, er, coz Kurt insulted Axl Rose, it makes him a dick and an asshole, etc etc. Do you know how many people Axl insulted? Jeezus, he only fired like, ALL of his band members and refused to allow them to use the name Guns n' Roses. As well as attacking press photographers, fans etc, trying to throw a grand piano out of a hotel window etc. If you had done your research properly, you would have seen that Kurt's insult (if that was even true) was in retaliation to Axl threatening to beat up Courtney Love, which happened long before this supposed insult (let's not forget that one thing a person says tells you everything about their character hey ). Axl blew millions of dollars on extravagant music videos and a life of excess, and totally spiralled out of control. He frequently advocated using violence, and threatened to beat up numerous people. If you want to excuse this behaviour because of his troubled childhood, fine. So I guess he wasn't an asshole, just a poor innocent victim of big, bad mean asshole Kurt Cobain. By the way, I'm a huge GNR fan, but I'm not so blinded by the love of their music that I won't admit that Axl was a major asshole. Dude, you think Nirvana just "rode the grunge wave"? They're the ones who fucking catapulted the movement into the massive success that it became! How many documentaries, intervies, biographies have you read about Kurt Cobain? Yeah, he was a heroin junky. Why did he do heroin? Because he had severe stomach problems that often left him paralysed with pain, which the doctors could do nothing about. He had smoked a lot of pot before (who hasn't?)and decided that the only thing likely to kill the pain was heroin. Jim Morrison was almost continously fucked up on some sort of drug too. He took pretty much anything and everything. John Lennon was ridig high on the acid wave for many years. Jeez, most rock stars I can think of have been addicted to something, be it alcohol or narcotics. Cobain, the "dick"/"asshole", as you so politely put it, despite not knowing him personally, continually spoke out for the virtues and rights of women, spoke out strongly against homophobia and racism, and never "sold-out" his values. He couldn't stand the fact that the jock assholes, and people who didn't give a shit about small music scenes, who had tormented him and made him an outcast in high school were now singing along to "Smells like Teen Spirit". He continually supported small, unknown acts and refused to pander to the shallow demands of MTV, executives and movie stars who wanted to be his friends. He didn't buy three Ferraris, he didn't snort coke off strippers' tits. He didn't set out to become a rock star - Nevermind was a surprise success. If you read his diaries, you'll quickly see that the most important things in his life were his music, and later, his daughter. Yeah, he killed himself. He was a junky. I don't think he was a god. I never met him personally, therefore I can't say with any conviction that he was the greatest guy around, or conversely, the biggest asshole around. But based on what i've read about him, and his own writings, lyrics and what I've seen in interviews, he seemed like a decent guy with a troubled past who was thrown into a situation that he couldn't handle. And who just happened to write some of the most amazing music ever. That's my opinion. Maybe you hate Nirvana, and their music. Fine, that's your opinion. However, you can't deny that it was revolutionary and changed the face of rock forever. Now, I'm gonna go listen to Nirvana. And you can listen to whatever you goddam want to.
Thank you for a really intellectual contribution to the topic. trapjaw, i agree with you. I'm really glad to see that there is at least someone who looks at this the way you do.
Really intelligent comment. I'm sure after reading that, the millions of people whose lives were changed by this movement and who still listen to it today, are suddenly gonna "see the light", man! I need a " big fuckin wank" smiley to insert right here.
It's true. Grunge was empty. It robbed rock 'n roll of the stuff it was made of, drained it. No soul.
Grunge changed "rock 'n roll" for the better. No soul? Mainstream music had no soul until grunge came along and gave it a shake-up... we need a touch more grunge now, mainstream music's getting a bit too poppy for my liking.
Tell me, what was rock n' roll made of then? And how did grunge rob it of this? Thanks fistermister, btw. At least there are other on this board who have the ability to think beyond blind hatred (Jeez, why DO you hate grunge so much?). Anyway, it's pretty pointless talking to these people who are incapable of making rational arguments, so I'm not saying any more on this topic.
It was just empty. It didn't have the same quality as maybe Queen's music, it was boring and lacked creativity unlike Pink Floyd, The Beatles put way more meaning into their words than those grunge bands, no musical maswterpiece songs i.e. Stairway to Heaven, Carry On Wayward Son or Bohemian Rhapsody, no power to change lives as the Grateful Dead did. No shredding guitar solos... maybe the guitarists weren't talented enough to come up with or play them, no exceptional musicians that could be counted as the greatest of all time like John Bonham, just lazy empty... should I even say music?
please tell me you arent judgeing all of the grunge genra based on a mean comment (although i did find it a bit funny) that one man made. so maybe grunge was more simple than Queen and zeppelin. maybe it was shorter and dirtier(sp?). maybe the singers diddnt have the same type of voice as the 70s singers, it was harsher and raspier, but i like Cobain and Vedder's voices. maybe kurt wasnt a super talented guitarist like Jimmy Page is. so what, doesnt mean he still cant make good songs. Grunge brought the true rock n roll spirit and essence. away from all the sex, money, and coke stuff it had turned into in the 80s. back to the real stuff, back to the core. true rock is not about the girls, or the drugs, or that. most of the time that comes along, but real rock is expression. art that comes straight from the heart and from your feelings. its about how you truely feel and are. not about tits and blow. sure, Axl's childhood sucked, but ya know what, so did Kurt's. so did many other peoples. ill tell you my life isnt a perfect Brady Bunch type of family. its not horrible, but its not great. just cause Axl had a bad childhood doesnt condone that he was a violent, sellout kind of person. you may not like grunge, but dont judge the whole genra based on one comment towards a person you have never met, and chances are you never will
Just because you dont like it doesn't make it empty. Are you really a 15 year old girl? The way you talk about grunge makes me think you might be older. If I didn't know any better I would say you are just a bit pissed off that a younger generation didn't like your music and decided to do something different. Queen, Pink Floyd et al had their moment. Now its over. Nirvana and grunge had their time in the spotlight too, now that's over. The 90s are long gone and pretty soon the 00s will be over too - and music will change again. Who cares.
you mean syd barret? he's probably not known to a major part of the pink floyd fanbase, but to the ones who know him he's a legend. could you name some other bands. your issue is pretty interesting
so violence can be justified? didn't know that! kurt had a shitty childhood to you know. i'm not going to tell you who had suffered more in his live, but violence can't be justified through a shitty childhood or whatever to me
To whoever made such a comment Not all fifteen year olds are ditzy airheads who are obsessed with their appearence and the pop song of the minute.
AS for being sickened, I am sickened that someone put Jim Morrison between John Lennon and Kurt Cobain. Morrison was an untalented, pathetic, arrogant asshole. Lennon and Cobain were pure genius.
Yeah, you were two when Cobain died and were an idea when Morrison died. So you know what you're talking about and you're not an airhead. Sorry.
