should i blame dutch people for when americans enslaved blacks? I WOULDN'T...but by your standards of blaming americans for influences that cause changes in dutch culture I should!

    Very well said mi amigo!

The fact that English is the 2nd lanuage of the Dutch is due in very large part to their consumption of American media. Kids want to watch such and such a show that's broadcast in English so you get kids learning English at a very early age with the incentive of American based media.

    Everyone together now, 1... 2... 3

Why can't we be friends, Why can't we be friends...

how come its getting hostile? does anybody perceive an elaborate, well thought out, logical response in a debate as a sign of aggression today? This forum is about sharing points of view and learning from each other. My tone was one of intellect....anybody taking it as hostile is merely being DEFENSIVE.

P.S. the dutch have always been great business people....that is the root reason why they embrace both commercialism and the english language (economics). I agree with you whole heartedly about the media being a current reason.

Lee Oscar, Howard Brown, and BB Dickerson of WAR are good friends! Thanks for making me think of them!

Lee donates an autographed gold harmonica for every fund-raiser for our local community radio station!

God this sounds like you think ive an excuse to blabber stupid things because 'im only 16'. I never talked about commercialism, its not what i mean. I do blame ourselves for adopting American practises, i never blamed anyone American. The only thing i said is that our culture is becoming more and more like the American culture, and that i dont like it. Im not saying one culture is better than another, im just saying i like the fact that cultures differe and i want it to stay that way. Never pointed fingers, never talked about commercialism, never said it was Americas fault.

    Hi everybody,

i am the dumbass (thats mr. dumass to you) that associated americanism with comercialism. but let me start from the beginning. this started becuase some dude started some other thread where he aptly demonstrated that no nation/peoples/race has a complete monopoly on assholes, and started some shit. that got peoples on edge. he was bitching about amsterdam. As the topic progressed it got on this topic of americanization, first how amsterdam was becoming americanized and then how holland too. the dutch girl with the gorgeous eyes i think mentioned it. i asked what it meant cuz i didnt know the term. but i thought i knew what she meant and posted something about comercialism or consumerism. then when this thread started we got onto the same crap again but by then she had responded to my query and said that what she meant by americanism wasnt the spread of consumerism or commercialism it was the insertion of so much american culture into her native culture. i don't think she meant it as negative; what i think is we need to do two things:
    1) find a word that replaces americanization with something that is more genral in terms and could be used to describe the action of an alien nations culture to be adopted wholesale or in part by another nation or culture. you know like gentrification is used to describe rich peeps movin in instead of crackerfication or honkification. its nicer and that good.
    2) ignore obvious assholes. thats smarter and thats good.

    say word.

once again i apologize for coming off abrasive. as for a word...there is one and it escapes me at the moment. the bottom line is that mauf and myrtje say an "insertion" of american culture while i say a "dutch demand" for american culture. if a dutch person is going to complain about it....complain about the "dutch demand" for american culture rather than the american "insertion" of american culture. conceptually and philosophically this all goes back to what nietzsche referred to as herd behavior....or what Hegel referred to as the master and slave relationship.

is ignorance bliss mafu? didn't mean to disrupt the usual flow of calm chatty dim witted and pointless postings. i guess a well informed logical argument is taken as a threat by you sir. why don't you contribute a logically formed point of view on the subject rather than preaching to the masses to ignore somebody who has? i guess its just easier to plan a course of action (your #1 #2 plan) than it is to be the one who states a point of view. I see you'd rather have people judge your plan then judge your point of view on the matter. Oh and #2 makes me think of the movie "revenge of the nerds"......all i have to say is "who decides the standards" but you've already appointed yourself judge jury and jailor....without even contributing a point of view on the topic you started! But now that you've openly insulted me for no good reason i'd say you default into the same category that you proclaimed i was in!

sorry myrtje....not trying to tell you what to think..just pointing out that the way you worded your original thoughts lends its self most easily to a viewpoint that you now say you are not endorsing. i think it was just a case of poor word selection....as mafu also suggested. your original words gave a tone to your post that BOTH OF US apparantly have been combatting ever since. now that you actually type "i am extremely annoyed by all the dutch people who adopt the american culture, and i'm not blaming the american people" we are in agreement. i hope you can realize that your original statement was not that clean cut, nor did it have the same intonation. I did not mean to put words in your mouth....i was reacting to your original wording: merely was trying to point out that american culture is not attacking you (as your original wording came across). Its economic and cultural globablization that is changing your environment. The "your upset dear" was my way of trying to keep this conversation at peace, more civil, and more comfortable after being labeled an "asshole" by others in the thread. I did not mean to be condoscending and if that is the way you took it....then once again i apologize dear (KIDDING KIDDING). Anyway, we now seem to be on the same page.

I want to, but it all depends on money and friends. My best friend and I wanted to go, but she forgot about having to go to Normandie with her parents... sucks. Im probably going to Den Haag on koninginnenach (the night before queens day), so it also depends on how much money i spend there. Youre going?

    Damn myrtje!

I figured for sure you'd be comin' to the hoedown at De Kuil seeings how you live in Holland. Maybe next time. You could come and see how much fun we Americans are capable of having given the freedoms your country provides.

C'est La Vie, perhaps next time, and YES there will be a "Next" time.

Yes I'll be there...it will be my 5th time in holland. I've been to amsterdam everytime and visited an extra city each trip. In my four trips i also hit rotterdam, leiden, ultrect, and tilburg. (obviously i was scouting the universities...was going to do a study abroad program).

I was thinking about going to see a jungle dj named grooverider in rotterdam on koninginnenach, but instead i'll be going to a small underground drum n bass show near overtoom called amsterdamaged.

    hey koopa,
I've seen Grooverider in the UK, great stuff, btw.
I'm into the same sort of stuff and scene as well.
Amsterdamaged sounds just as good though.
Have a good one in A'dam.
