LOL NO silk isn't tacky or overused! There's a number of different types of silk also...look up embroidered silk...it is really beautiful, and of course you could get any color...Crushed silk sort of has the look of some velvets, I think...

I'm confident you can find something that will look like you want that won't be as heavy and hot as velvet.

Get on over to Paris and see what those seamstresses of those fancy dresses say...they will show you probably 100 different swatches of material to choose from...and of course I think silk would be perfect for a wedding.
