It's very safe, as long as it's a comfortable plug with a wide enough base you aren't worried about it getting sucked inside! If it's a plug you can comfortably wear during the day, you should have no problem sleeping with it either! If it gets uncomfortable in the night, just take it out and try it another night. For some people it can take a few tries, for others it's really easy to just start.

I have slept with my second largest (2⅜" diameter) glass plug in. It has a good base & small enough neck that I don't need to worry about it moving in or out while I'm sleeping.
