Like thismoment said, I think the hole in the story is the "one drop" thing. Who's to say how much this random guy, presumably tripping himself, dropped into the guys nose? Also there's no way of knowing how potent the solution was. He could have easily given the guy more than 1-2mg, and I'm pretty sure there have been multiple reports of seizures within that dose range.

Also the alcohol and caffeine along with the general unplanned nature of the whole thing probably had a lot to do with his reaction to the drug.

I agree that these classic drugs should be available, however, I also think that experimentation with new drugs should also take place, perhaps not in the manner that it generally does though. Without experimentation with new analogues and drugs, it seems to me that our understanding of the brain and its neurochemistry would not be able to progress nearly as fast. Who can say that some incredibly revealing and/or useful compounds will not be discovered? You'll never learn more unless you experiment, and though there will be that percentage that abuse them, they are still contributing to our knowledge.

however I do completely understand where you're coming from, it's kind of stupid for the government to make more well researched drugs illegal hence promoting unresearched drugs to the market (while I do think that new drugs should be researched I don't think that they should be the only available choice). The whole drug war is a complete failure anyway, prohibitions proved that, but it's just a big money mongering scheme anyway ...
