I made a papoose for my friend and her newborn. It depends on how big the baby is and the mother, though. My friend loves hers. She says it is comfortable and great cause then her hands are free to do other things. I would say a blanket is always a safe bet and some onesies.

I used to always make a baby blanket since they are useful for a while before the baby gets too big.

If you are not making the gift, get a good children's book. Those hang around a lot longer.

Something that is fun to do and it can add to your gift is to make a time capsule for the baby. Put things in it that are relevant to the year the child is born and even the day such as newspaper clipping, current toy trend and so on. Seal it and they can open it when they turn 18. It is a fun thing to do and to open.
