I am getting new windows for this house, as the screens are all shot by cats, and these windows are the kind that go up and down the old fashioned way, where some of them are not staying up anymore, without a stick of some kind to hold them up.What kind of windows do you have? Do you recommend the kind that roll to tilt outwards. What are the cons of those kind? Does the turn handle keep cats from sitting on window sills?I have someone coming here on Monday to take a look and give a free estimate. I will also have a few other people come to give estimates. Obviously, the window with the air conditioner in it downstairs here, will still have to be the kind that goes up the old fashioned way, I would assume....Any thoughts about house windows? and I cannot type here without it all running together.
I replaced the windows in my home about 8 years ago. I went with all casement windows that open with a crank. The bedroom ones are casement as well but tip as then they can be cleaned from the inside. There was not easy access to those from outside for cleaning The others I had access to so I went with regular casements. To keep the cats off the sills, put aluminum foil on them and the cats will not go there, they hate the feel of it.
This may not be helpful but years ago I knew a guy who started selling windows. He came over for a practice sales call at our house. One of the selling points was that the screens on his windows were very hard to damage in the way a cat would. When he demonstrated, I remember thinking the screen would surely be ruined but it looked perfect. I wish I could remember the brand but something like that may be available if you look around. They were pretty expensive though.
Yeah, I just realized with crank out windows, the screens would be on the inside, whereas they are on the outside right now....and these windows here are real wood. I imagine they would be more expensive, also....Well, maybe getting new windows is not such a good idea at the moment....but new screens are definitely in order here. I will hear what the people have to say.....they make custom windows, anything you want, they state....I love to have my windows open around here..... and even have one open at times in the cold months. Thanks for your thoughts Heather and Wizard....
Thank you, Wizard. yes, that kind of screen is what I need here....so many holes from cats in these.....ugh......I am going to show that link to the people here on Monday....
You're welcome. I have no idea if one brand is better than another but it sounds like some type of that product is the way to go.

i have both kinds of windows here. they both have their pros and cons. slide up-and-down windows allow for more air flow, and if you need to put yourself or something else through the window, they have more room for it. and they're slightly easier to open and close. crank tilt windows are better at blocking the rain while they're open. overall, i don't think it makes any measurable difference which kind you have. as far as cats, i don't know. i don't have windowsills or cats, so there's really no concern of cats sitting on the windowsills. the inside/outside screen thing is probably worth considering.
i had that figured out already, since i think you've said before that you would like to change your name to this. but thanks for being the one person nice enough to point out their name change anyway.
Most likely since she would not likely post this in the Introduce yourself forum. I am sure we are going to find all kinds of whacky threads since the conversion.
This house has the original 1948-1960 Anderson double pane windows... Many are wooden casement windows (crank) and the others stationary glass... The casement windows don't have enough sill on the inside for a cat to sit on. Having the screens inside is not a problem because of the lack of window sill. On another note, cost of replacement for these windows would be off the charts... Oh, and welcome to the forums
