Any fans in here? I saw them a few months ago and it was flat out the most amazing live music performance I have ever seen. And they say they are done for good.. I hope not because I really want to see them again.
They were one of the better bands out of elephant six, though I really love of montreal I think this is one of the most psychedelic tracks out of the 90s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYzMMErBbHk
Love their music, worst name ever though. It seems so pretentious. My boyfriend has seen them live a few times and he says they are one of his fave live bands.
I have a couple of friends who are really into them but i was never able to get into them, i dont really remember what i didn't like about them so maybe i will give them another chance.
They're (really it's just a one-man project based around Jeff Mangum) pretty overrated in my opinion. Then again, I am not really into folky, lo-fi type music. I just find it boring and it doesn't do much for me personally. I think the cover art for 'In The Aeroplane Over the Sea' is pretty damn cool, though. But it's probably one of the most overrated albums I have ever heard. The songwriting is interesting, but not much else. I don't really understand the hype this album/project receives.
They have a couple of songs that I like. Sometimes the weirdness of the lyrics makes me cringe, but I suppose that's part of the appeal for some people.
The live show was so great. There were anywhere from 3 to maybe 10 people on stage at any given point, and they were multi instrumentalists. Going back and forth between guitars, every kind of brass instrument you can think of, accordions. One guy was even playing a saw. For all the years I listened to them I never knew that sound was a saw.. The acoustics in the venue I saw them are incredible also, it's an old church. Thoroughly enjoyed and it gave me a new respect for their music.
In that week we saw neutral milk hotel, Jenny Lewis, and built to spill. It was legendary for me but then again I'm into that music.
I saw them live on this tour, and the album kind of felt like shades of beck and pink floyd to me, while still keeping the of montreal vibe. It can be a hard band to get into, because he (Kevin Barnes) releases so much material every year, not all of it good, but each album always has its gems https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-pe3MBRPhA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LolPT5a_ZMc
I've only heard this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgIT9Mrvddw But it's beautiful and I've loved it for a long time. Perhaps I should delve a little deeper.
I didn't like obsidian currents that much. I liked the party's crashing us. I didn't like parts of it, especially the lyrics "we made love like a pair of black wizards". On the other hand "You fucked the suburbs out of me" was funny as hell. I'd go so far as to say the bridge at 3:38 is a flash of brilliance.
i think this band is awful. i can't really stand listening to them, and songs from that Aeroplane over the Sea album are always popping up on radio stations i make online. i skip them EVERY time. it's the dude's voice. but i don't really dig folk music much, so maybe that is why i dislike this band so much. i don't know who jenny lewis is, but you already know i love built to spill! how was that show, or is it the one you've already talked about on here?
