I just watched a documentary on a place called the highway of tears.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lx1JAqFLtlo

It's a long stretch of highway where women are abducted, raped and murdered. Now I'm not making this a Muslim vs American thing. But I will at the first sign of Islamphobia/hate speech. So for now let's just be adults and say that regardless of nationality or religion, there's monsters.

Watching the documentary at the 27:30 mark the police detective says they've interviewed over 60,000 people and have over 1,400 persons of interest. He goes on to say that he's amazed at how many men are capable of doing this sort of thing and they've caught men who have removed the door handles on the insides of their vans and equiped for kidnapping with duct tape, plastic wrist restraints, trap doors etc. All of these abductions and murders have been sexually motivated.

So my question isn't it at least possible that wearing hijab is a good thing? Perhaps it saves lives?

I know there's still rape and murder in Islamic nations. However it seems to me a man is less likely to abduct and rape a woman if she's covered.

No, I do not think that would help in any way. If anything, a man's curiosity and sexual drive would be stonger because of wondering what is under all that clothing. I have read, but do not know for a fact that people raised in a nudist lifestyle are less likely to commit rape. I think it would make sense as seeing each other nude on a daily basis would dull the excitement of sexual attraction. But I am sure rape occurs there as well.....

    that's just naive' and silly.
I tend to agree with Scratcho.

and yes there is rape and murder in Islamic nations, quite often a woman gets raped and then gets murdered by her husband/family for being the victim of a sexual assault.

and that is not Islamaphobia or hate speech, it's fact.

Rape is a crime of hate. It's not driven by normal sexual desire.

by suggesting that women who cover up are less likely to get raped, you're really participating in victim blaming; i.e., she was dressed like a slut so she asked for it.

I do know it is common in some middle eastern countries to blame the victim and not the rapist, and I also know rape is not considered a crime in some middle eastern countries therefore it is impossible to discuss statistics or discern whether rape is actually more common in America.

I'm not saying wearing a hijab or headscarf (which in the end seems to be worn for different reasons!) is always a bad thing but overall I agree with what the other posters have been saying here: that basically the possibility of being raped should not be the reason to wear it.

This maybe true but are you suggesting that some of the guilt of abduction rests with the woman? Surely the man is still responsible for his actions alone?

Well, he already acknowledged that in his OP ;) It could be considered hate speech if a person would connect the fact that the victim is sometimes punished for being raped blatantly and immediatly to their religion. As anybody with a bit of insight knows traditional society and different cultural perspectives are at least as much to blame.

or simply a statement of fact that when examined further, belies the underlying sentiment of the OP and Islamic beliefs, as Meliai pointed out.
His simply implying that wearing a bee-keeper suit would deter rape is naive' and originated from a dull mind...
or it could just be another thinly veiled "set-up" type of question that good ol' Mustafa has been peppering the boards with. ;)

and may I point out that in many Islamic nations, religious law IS secular law, so making the connection is not hate speech, it's fact.

Well since he explained in the OP that he does not want to make this thread about stigmatizing islamic belief or a islamic nations vs. the west convo again I'd say let's give it a try. After all he has made no other post in this thread so far. That he is inclined to think it could save lifes can also just be his own thought/opinion right? It doesn't immediatly have to be every muslim's standpoint just because he said it and he's a muslim.

I can see that you think it's a simple setup but if we don't go there and his intend is to eventually go there let just let him go there himself and make it apparent instead to catering to this possible setup by going there ourselves ;)

true, but it's still a naive' idea regardless of what religion the person thinking it follows. :p
but then again, the OP is the one who made Islamic practices the focal point of the thread, true?
If we are going to use one Islamic practice and how it possibly relates to sexual assault, then isn't it only fair to also bring into the discussion other Islamic practices related to the crime of rape?
I feel considering the religious aspects to be very appropriate to the discussion as it is most likely the root for the OP's viewpoint, which as was pointed out, falls into that "she was asking for it" bullshit.
Antiquated, misogynistic stupidity that views woman as lesser beings and property.

and since when did relating facts become hate speech????

It didn't of course. I said when it is blatantly assumed the killing of the victim by her family is done out of religious motives it could be considered something like hate speech or islamophobia. I think we are really on the same page but I try to give Abdul the benefit of the doubt since he himself emphasized to not let it head in such a direction. So I hope we are not the ones who start going there :p I really think this is an interesting (and serious) issue since I often hear the hijab is ONLY a sign of repression by their husband or religion while I know it is often voluntarily worn.

The #1 cause of rape is rapists.

Every man knows exactly what's under a womans clothing, regardless of the society they're in. Men who are inclined to rape have a certain mind set and will rape regardless of the covering. Manservant said it in fewer words.

I've heard and read over the years, that crime is virtually non-existent among nudists.

When I lived on the Big Island of Hawaii in the early 70s, I was surrounded by naked women every day and believe it or not, soon I didn't even notice whether someone I was talking to was clothed or without clothes. It just became a non factor.

exactly. If anything I would guess that instances of rape would be higher in societies that stigmatize sexuality and nudity.

Yes and it happens in the United States too. In fact it happens in atheist, christian and even buddhist homes. There's no published stats on the Internet saying this sort of thing happens any more or less in any Islamic nation vs western nation. And the reason for that is because of these stats

Approximately 23% of the world's population is Muslim. Current estimates conclude that the number of Muslims in the world is around 1.6 billion. Muslims are the majority in 49 countries, they speak about 60 languages, and come from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Major languages spoken by Muslims include Arabic, Bengali, Punjabi, Javanese, Turkish, Urdu, Persian, Pashto, Sindhi and Kashmiri. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim_world So YES IT'S HATE SPEECH! And that's a FACT!
When the facts you're presenting are not based on actual facts but sterotypes and media sensationalism. You've taken 1.6 billion people that live in at least 49 different nations and speak around 60 different languages and put them under 1 single group and labled it ISLAM.

I can't comment about "ALL" middle eastern nations. But in Palestine where I come from it's tradition to casturate rapists.

What the west calls a trial doesn't really happen and a lot of that is Isreal's fault. So when a man is accused of rape it's handled pretty quickly by the community. Quite often the girl that was raped might be asked to do the cutting. It's very brutal but so was the rape.

Not at all, I believe in cutting off a rapist's penis and testicules for a first offense. My only concern is the safety of women. If men can't control their desires (sexual or for control) then perhaps something like covering up can be considered safety equipment?

    Both cultures have rape.
The major cultural difference comes in how we treat the victims.
Here we are striving to give voice and support to victims.

Could you please cite ONE instance of a husband/father/brother killing a wife/sister/daughter for being the victim of rape in one of these households you mention and that ARE NOT Muslim?

You know as well as I do that with little to no effort that documentation of HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of such "honor killings" committed by Muslims could be found, many with video of the murder.

So frankly I don't give a shit if YOU think it's hate speech and are personally offended, it is fact and a daily reality of many of YOUR religions practitioners, deal with it.

About 10 minutes after seeing in the news that rapists will and have been castrated --rape will disappear.
