Need help with a thorn

I have this thorn in my foot, i did'nt feel it when it went in, but it's starting to get infected, it's all red. I can't get it out by normal methods, but i remember on the old boards, someone mentioned this thing some people in africa used to do, with a cup of water. Suction or something. Anyone know what im talking about?

 

I had a sliver of glass in my paw the other day. Took a single-edged razor blade and carefully shaved away at the punture. It worked well and the pain was minimal.
