I don't think this scam has gained much traction in the US. We are pretty savvy here regarding hackers and an "overseas call" wouldn't be microsoft calling, as they are based in the US.

I guess Americans have become more immune to phone scams since we had them for at least 30+ years now.

But as they say, there's a sucker born every minute.

BTW, did any victims of this scam bother to ask how Microsoft got your phone number? eh?

It's not something you'd normally give out to Microsoft, unless you contacted them first. And Microsoft would never initiate a "overseas" call unless you requested help first.

Gotta be careful. I work as a network analyst and we have all kinds of schemes and stuff come our way. I also make good side money fixing computers jacked up by email bombs and stuff.

bahahaha i would love to get this call, as I'm using Ubuntu, but yeah one of my friends just got called a couple weeks ago, same thing Microsoft telling them there was a virus on her comp, she just hung up on them th. Microsoft would never call you to inform you you have a virus, how would they even get your number? Its not like when you install windows they ask you for a contact number. I've had Rogers (ISP) call before though and tell me I have one, but they didn't ask to login to anything, just told me that until the virus was fixed I would no longer receive Internet service. So yeah this is totally bogus

As much of a pain in the ass as it may be, if you let them connect to your computer you should probably back up any vital files, format your drive and reinstall windows. It's the only way to be sure nothing is running in the background.
