My brother in law has type 1

He's been insulin dependent for well over 20 years... his challenges include not allowing levels to get too low and going into insulin shock. The remedy is sugar- but he can get combative while in that state when my sister attempts to administer.. he behaves like an angry violent drunk.

My sense is that your fiancee will have to educate himself on how he reacts to food and activity beyond his routine- anticipating when he may be needing less insuline, etc.

As far as being close to a cure... bear in mind that the medical/pharmaceutical industry is a for profit entity. While it presents itself as on the quest for a cure, it is simply far more profitable to maintain a condition and have subjects continually treat symptoms for the rest of their lives.. a cure would effectively remove the hands of big drug companies from our pockets. Don't expect any real progress... expect instead regular and periodic breaking medical news about how close they are coming- to keep people gulled into believing that a cure is the prime objective. Don't be fooled, it isn't.... it's the last thing they want.

he doesn't eat any.. I think that's why he gets agitated because he would like to.. but it raises just way too high.. hell he can't eat Chinese food.. can't eat.. pasta, bread, potatoes, corn, anything with sugar.. he has to stay away from carbs big time.. everything in our house is diet or sugar free.. for him.. lol I have my junk..

he's doin extremely well with his diet his poor body just wont create enough natural insulin for him. it goes up on him constantly.. it's starting to worry me that he wont live to be old and grey with me..
it's scary to think that he has a disease that kills people all the time.. or atleast lose limbs and eye sight..

I laid in bed with him while he was literally dying.. just thinking he had sun poisning before he knew he was diabetic.. it's scary that he can serioiusly die if he doesn't get all this under control.. they said if he wasn't in such great shape that there was no way his heart could have handled all that so thank god for that..

The good news is if he gets it under control, he CAN live to grow old with you. My dad was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when I was just a little kid...I don't think my brother was even born yet, and my brother is graduating high school next week and my dad is doing pretty good as far as the diabetes is concerned. :)

if it's type 1, then he does need to do something, and quickly. from a medical perspective, type 1 is very dangerous because it often really can't be controlled by diet, exercise, and other healthy things.

i'm all for alternative remedies, and hate the health care system. just keep a very close eye on him, and if his BS is over 300 for more than 24 hours in a row, he really does need to see a doctor. because that can put so much strain on his body that even though he's healthy, he won't be able to keep up with homeostasis for long.

whoever mentioned cinnamon, i concur. :) i'm often hypoglycemic, and i've used cinnamon capsules with great results to help regulate blood sugar. it really helps keep it evened out, so you don't use up all the sugar at once, leading to high BS levels that are followed by dangerous drops.

i also agree with those who have suggested chinese or eastern medicine and homeopathy. there are so many herbs and treatments that work on the roots and causes of the problem rather than simply treating the symptoms, which is what insulin does. esp. if he doesn't have insurance anyway, there's no harm in at least trying. a lot of holistic practitioners will work with whatever financial situation you have to try and help you, because they know just how shitty the medical system is, and such.

and if he ever gets a sweet, winey smell to his mouth, take him to the emergency room immediately. it's the #1 sign of DKA, or diabetic ketoacidosis, which is most common in type 1 diabetes because the body is SO bad at making natural insulin that it's very easy to stay at high levels of BS without even knowing it.

how often does he check his BS? if he's having problems with it being so out of control, he needs to be checking it every time before and after he eats, as well as every morning and every night, and anytime in between that he feels different than usual. when diabetes is just diagnosed, it can take a very long time to figure out your trends as far as BS levels, and to figure out what foods affect your BS the most. because each individual reacts to different foods in different ways. while whole grains, veggies, little or no processed foods, and low fat low sugar diets are optimal, you have to find just which ones work the best for you.

sounds like it's time for him to sit down and really explore what each food does for his body. also, avoid milk and orange juice like the plague. they are two of the most sugar laden drinks you can have. also, cranberry juice (plain, unsweetened, not from concentrate) or cranberry supplements would be a fantastic idea, as they facilitate kidney function, which tends to go kaput when the body is under diabetic stress.
