agreed. natural dreads is the way to go, im dreading my hair naturaly at the moment. The draeds that come out are really good and its fun because you just find them randomly on your head =]

wearing a hat that helps ur dreads helps i think. also means u can dread your hair naturaly in collage and no1 really notices (+ it stops my hair from going completly crazy)

    Backcomb

I needed my hair to look semi presentable straight away.

Also, for the last year while I was growing my hair in order to get dreads I did not comb my hair once. I washed it in residue free soap and vigorously towl dried it and then left it. I wore lots of hats (not all at the same time) and just left my hair to it's own devices and when my Wife used a comb to section my hair for backcombing there were very few tangles and the comb went though it with no trouble.

I think it would have taken years for my hair to dread up naturally so I decided to do the next best thing.

Back combed, no elastic and no wax just a little time and a little aloe

I backcombed, but I didnt use wax, I dont palmroll, I occasionally rip em apart.
    Hella people think they're naturals.
If I ever decide to cut or comb out and restart, then I'll freeform. But as for now, I'm only 6-7 months in with no plans to cut.

I backcombed however i left them alone after that and they have gotten really loose and barely look like dreads, I'm just gonna leave them alone and see what happens to them =D (it's only been 14 days here <<)

On the subject of backcombing... My hair has been talking an insane amount of time to backcomb (about 4 hours+ per dread). My hair is somewhat long (about mid-back level)- I just wanted to know if it took anyone else this long? I hear on average it takes about 8-12 hours, but its looking to take weeks/months for me!! I know dradheadHQ is a complete joke, but is that "Lock Peppa" (lol) worth trying?

I was curious about the same thing, it appears as if it might leave a residue, but nothing that couldnt easily wash out. i'd be interested to hear if anyone has tried it and what the results may have been.

ppl tried it its basicly rosin and yea residue which then causes flakyness

long hair takes longer to backcomb..odviosly
    but
it would lock up fast left on its own
if u wash it and go to bed with wet hair dont u wake up with it all knotty?

Yeah, my hair took a long time to backcomb also. My hair is really thick, and was about 6 inches long when I had my backcombing done. My sister and my mom took turns over the course of 6 days combing between 5-6 hours per day. In total it took around 34 hours to backcomb my hair completely. They did comb it extremely tight though, so maybe they spent more time than necessary (though none of it was really 'necessary') doing each section. As for the lock peppa--I wouldn't use any of DreadheadHQ's products. They took me for a ride with their 'Supa Dupa Dread Kit Ultra' (wow, how could I have thought a product with that name would be worth it!?) and then I found the good people here who steered me in the right direction. Thanks again everyone! [IMG]

EDIT: Yes, I'm stupid and couldn't find the 'Quote' button [IMG]

Usually it was if I remember correctly. Its just the past few months I wanted to go the "complete" neglect way- so I did absolutely nothing to my hair (no washing, combing, etc...)
I know it is supposed to be clean, but I wanted to see what would happen, and laziness was a factor too, hehe.... It was too greasy and didn't seem to knot up much so I thought I would try backcombing and taking care of my hair. I'm just taking my time with it... some days I don't even backcomb, so its just a casual thing for me really. I am enjoying just letting it go and not worrying so much about it. Just taking random sections and going at it- its not even and will probably look ..... bad.... but I think it will work itself out in the end (Hopefully!!).

Anyway, thanks for the replies you three. It sounds like just all DHHQ products are just a complete joke.

dhhq products are worse thenj as joke theyre harmful
but you dsaid..most days u dont bsackcomb? what you are continualy backcombing?
    thats not good

try the deep cleanse stuff to get the greasyness out
    then just let it be
    no more backcombing
dont even monitor the process for like a month (except to rip/seperate them)

I'm not being argumentative but I don't really see how people can say backcombed locks are natural. I understand that you are just speeding up the process, but it seems your doing more than that. You are controlling the size and my main point is your sitting there putting so much time and effort into how you look. Now I am certainly not badmouthing backcombing at all, to each their own. I just don't consider backcombed "natural". Just to clarify: I like backcombed locks, they usually "look" much better than "natural". In my very very humble opinion. Much Metta to U

I am all about natural locks. I don't agree with backcombing, it is totally unnecessary. But I understand that a lot of people are misinformed, due to sites like KnottyBoy and DreadHeadHQ. You don't need all those extra products to make dreadlocks, time is really the only tool you need for awesome dreads. It is also about the principle behind it, and the spiritual journey that goes along with natural locks.

whats up with all the people saying natural is BETTER than back combing.
lea that to each individual to decide... geeeez... their just two different ways to go about about it, both with ''pros'' and ''cons''.

i personally think back combed looks way better in most cases, and not everyone think naturals look good.

dont say this is better then that, atleast express it as an OPPINION not a fact.
when your saying natural is ''supperior'' to backombing are you taking into consideration that its veeery difficult to get a job with them f. excample??

I was wondering Epuuh if you were addressing me because I never used the words superior or better and I did, in fact, state that is was my "very humble opinion". I just beleive they are not the same, that is all I was saying. Nothing more. Cheers

For me backcombing was the way to go simply because I was able to control where the dreads would form (through sectioning the hair before backcombing.) I'm not saying this way is at all superior to just going natural, it just helped in my case because I work in a professional setting, and was more likely to be allowed to grow dreads if they appeared at least a little orderly
