I've seen quite a few natural dreads in my time and I have yet to see anyone who, after a couple of weeks, had much more than tangles. My hair apparently dreads pretty fast and it was at least three or four months before you could even imagine that hey were dreads. Most seem to take closer to a year or more.

Yanno, maybe what we could do to help this thread along is create something called a definition. Before anyone says that your hair will be locked by 2 weeks, 2 months, 2 years, you should (as a responsible forum participant) give your definition of what "locked" means. Does it mean that when you hold it to a light source, you can see right through it? what!? we need some criteria!

Well that's what I meant just now about soaringeagle maybe showing us some pics of what he's referring to as dreaded within a few weeks of living in the wilderness.

I always thought "locked up" meant your hair looks like ropes because all the bumps and stufff had gone.

    Thats your problem speedy garbonzo

    Time is what you lack

and yeah as chaos said. I didnt see any real progress till at least a year maybe a year and half. And even then it was just a helmet of knotts. No defined dreads by any means

    yeah me too, dreadhead.
in my mind, its like: sectioned, then knotted, then locked. though obviously everyone has a different idea about the terms.

Well, mine is pretty much natural but I did help it in the beginning by backcombing my hair all at once (no sections) and my hair sectioned itself within a month and now at 4 months the sections are starting to knot/clump/loop (pics in my album)

My hair was very straight, fine, silky, thin before starting and would knot easily on its own.

Yeah, what do people mean when they say dreaded or locked? I assume we all have different ideas on this.

a lot of people hesitate to use the term "dread" "dreadlock" "dreaded" (that one in particular is annoying to me) because the word dread has a negative connotation.

Ok, this was the definition I took from here.

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/dreadlocks

a hair style, esp. among Rastafarians, in which the hair is worn in long, ropelike locks.

I guess I would probably describe them as something similar, I'm sure there are differences of opinion between those who have grown dreads and are clued up about dreads to those who aren't, when they see people who are trying to grow dreads.

Certainly I know when I was walking around looking like after about a year and half of going natural, people were still wondering what the hell I was doing with my hair, but still to that point what I hadn't touched at all was just like normal hair, just maybe separated into sections, but not in anyway knotted.

I'm totally losing the plot here about what my point was here, I think what I'm trying to say is it's a very difficult thing to put a timescale on how long it takes to grow "natural" locks, for some it appears to happen effortlessly, whereas for others it takes a lot longer.

I think it's foolish to give people potentially false hope by saying within weeks you'll have dreads, likewise I wouldn't want to put people off by saying it'll take at least two years for them to be recognisible as dreads. I also think if you're up for going natural then you probably shouldn't be too worried about when you're going to actually "have" dreads, or the length of time it's going to take.

wow this thread has really blown up! great to see so many people give their opinions. i definitely was not expecting to be all dreaded or anything close to that at this point. i was only expecting a sign that it was beginning. i'll post pictures soon.
