Trish, you are so right. You know to that if somebody came over hear and did to us what the whites did to the native americans years ago they would be shouting terrorism and bombs and gunfire would be heard loud and clear. Its something how they can do that to other people but if somebody does it to us, well thats another story. It doesn't make any sence at all does it. I always said if i had my way i would give every square inch of this land back to the native americans. People say, but we brought them this modern world. Well i must tell them that this modern world is doing nothing but polluting our land, streams, lakes and air. I would rather live like the Native Americans.

You have to understand (I'm being very serious when I say this and I can only hope that you listen to me but I'm not begging or crying when you don't.) people knew they were wrong when they were doing it. It was wrong when they gave that Christopher Columbus guy a holiday for finding a place inhabited by people. It was wrong to pretend to be friends with people so that you could take their land away and make your fortune. It was wrong to steal people's heritage from them and write history depleting them as evil monsters that preyed on poor innocent whites so that the whites look like victims. They were not the victims. They were the aggressors and thieves. (Yes thieves) When you turn on an old Western on TV you see mostly white people painted to look like Indians. You probally wouldn't know a real Indian if you saw one because people have conditioned us to think of white people (Mostly Jewish and Italians because they are dark) with tans to be Indians. Now you might be saying why are you telling us this, well, I think it helps you to understand my next point.

Sometimes people need something that is familiar in order to care. Yeah Indians were/are mistreated but people don't care because it's not them. You say that African Americans complain alot and they get noticed, well that's because people took and interest in them because they fought for that interest. They made their own movies, and they did other things that let the rest of the country know that hey there is a difference between a black person and a painted white person that is playing the role of a black person. Indians haven't really gotten the chance to do that until recent because the race was almost completely lost. There has been a lot of interracial marriages and slaughter, which has caused the race to become one of the smallest minorities.

The reason that the culture is still known is because there are Pow-wows and reservations that people can visit and meet and learn about the heritage. It also helps that a lot of whites that are famous have laid claim to partial heritage and has helped people not to feel that prejudice or shall I say that (Non-relationional) feeling that people sometimes have because they are not a part of a certain race. Example: A Mexican man can tell you something about his culture. You will listen and it may interest you but unless you are part Spanish than it might not mean as much or capture your imagination as a race or nationality that is a part of you. (Sorry that I'm so long winded today.)

I'm closing with this. Yeah it's bad what happened and you can't really say better or worse than other races because it was bad for not only Africans and Indians but for Jewish people, Asians, and others that had limited power because the number of people was small. I'm a firm believer that if you try to love and learn about everyone and their cultures than there wouldn't be so much of a divide and race relations would get a whole lot better. (Besides it fun to go different places when you can appreciate culture and good cooking.)

Ok. I think what happened to the Aboriginals (which is what I was taught to say, sorry if that's wrong...damn Canadian public school system) was horrible and very, very wrong. I think it's awful that in a lot of cases, they can't catch a break after all they've been through.

I think it's sad when ANYONE gets taken advantage of and mistreated. Why can't people just being such little shits? Greedy little asses that are destroying the world. This is what happens when people can see only in terms of colour/race/ethnicity and GREED.

Yeah ok, some Aboriginals are doing ok for themselves now with this casino/gas thing that they've got going on...but if you listen to what's said (if you check out some research, interviews, etc) the biggest complaint isn't actually finacial, it's cultural. A group of people (a HUGE group of people) have had their culture almost entirely erased... whoever it was in this thread that talked about "lost souls" hit the nail right on the head.

Amen brother, Amen. You are one of the nice people of the world. I wish there were more people like you around. I go through what your wife does everyday of my life as well. Racism in this country is widely accepted against my people. I've heard the terms "why dont you go back to your teepee?" or "go huff some gas" so many times I cant count them anymore. It pains me to know that so many white folk are intolerant as to what the situation of my people is.
They always think "Oh, I've met one Indian, so I know what their lives are like." Oh how wrong you are. What is happening to my people is not ATTEMPTED genocide. IT IS GENOCIDE. It just isnt classified as such, because it is being done methodically over a long period of time. The Canadian government knows what it's doing. I wish people would just open their eyes to the big picture, and see whats ACTUALLY going on. Theres a lot more to it than what the government tells you.

As for technology, we did not want it. It was forced on us by the white man as the "proper way" of doing things. As for "what to call us." We as a people do not like to be called "Indians". We are not from India, nor do we wish to be. I am not Indian, Aboriginal, or even Canadian for that matter. I am Ojibwe. The proper way to refer to someone of "Native" origin, is by their Tribe. Everyone of our tribes are unique. From Ojibwe to Cree and Nootka *just to name a few*. We all have our own languages, traditions and ceremonies which are sacred to us. Personally I feel at a loss (as do a lot of my people), and empty as a person because I cannot speak my language and know next to nothing about my heritage, as I was raised with white Catholics, but rejected religion. I am slowly learning about who I am, and the history in which my people have. Slowly but surely I am becoming a person.

 

as a note, your particular people may not like it, but the navajos i lived and worked with just told me to call the indian, it saved time. or dine. dine worked.

haha, my family lived with navajos for YEARS and the ones i met, my pen pals and friends still neved liked it. indians are from indiana. like where my mom just came back from. doh.


ps- yeah, technology sucks. id give me arm and leg to be a part of a more simple, peaceful time.

 

well, perhaps times have changed. i learned what to call them (outta politeness) by just asking. indian was fine. with them and with granpa.

 

Well it differs from tribe to tribe. The Ojibwe prefer to be called just that, or Anishinabek, which means "first people" in our language. KC, you must understand. I feel as if I am not a person because the Creator made every living organism with 2 parts which must co-exist in harmony. Physical *which I have* & Spiritual *Which I am missing*. I will only become a complete being when I achieve both, therefore I am not a person yet.
Interval...I'm with you. Sometimes I just want all technology to disappear from the earth, and go back to a traditional way. Other times I enjoy it, as does everyone. My people would have eventually evolved from what we were...but I doubt we would have done it the way things are going now.

but there is a balance.. which i feel you know. between "that" and "us". i think it needs to be and will (would) make life much more simple.

 

But lacking an arm and a leg in a much simpler time would make things vastly more complicated.
