george martin's havaland tuf had a cloned hyperpsychic cat he named dax. (poking it's head out of his pocket and all) long story. actualy a collection of storries involving said tuffie and the rather impressive ship he rather unexpectedly aquired, the e.e.c. ark. e.e.c. standing for earth ecology corp, which were actualy more like a corp of (environmental) engineers, (also anciently defunct at the time of the stories in the book) but at any rate the book is called tuf voyaging, for anyone who hasn't read it.
