Well I more remember Lemmy being a member of Hawkwind than in Motorhead. I'm not sure John Mayer can handle the psychedelic vibe the dead is known for.

I know they supposedly had a psychedelic vibe, though Jerry was dick-in-the-dirt from heroin most of the time on stage, lol.

A lot of the 'psychedelic vibe' you describe was the result of loose jamming and dubious tuning. Mind you, I've hear a shitload of GD boot's from the 70's, my old pot dealer in highschool would play hours and hours of it everytime I would go to his house to score, lol
There was good shit too, I'm not totally shooting GD down...but Mayer is a good enough musician to put aside his personal style and do his best to do justice to GD music, which he must be into or I doubt he would have taken the gig.

I expected Mike Gordon to handle bass duties since Phil Lesh is not gonna participate in the show but he declined. (I bet Phil knew about this and said "fuck it" XD) Instead they got the Allman Brothers band's Oteil Burbridge on bass which is a pretty good choice. I'm surprised that Bruce Hornsby also declined but he did play for the reunion shows which is an irony and I wonder why?

Just look at it as a project or yet another tribute band.

But, hey, maybe something for NYE back west.

Well he has the Hendrix vibe especially in the beginning when he teases "Machine Gun". Why can't the music industry expose his insane talent instead of those crappy pop songs he did, ugh!!!? Ok, you won my heart over Mayer but hopefully he doesn't screw up the show, But I can't picture him playing "Dark Star" or "The Other One"

You're probably more than welcome to audition for the dead as a guitarist..

Because thats where the money is. There's no market for blues-rock anymore.

The consolation is, Mayer is to the point in his career that he can do what he wants, like sitting in with GD!

Dude, get over it. you seem to be the only one getting their panties in a bunch over it and please explain how this directly impacts your daily life to warrant such a reaction?

But after seeing John Mayer a bit more with his guitar talent, it changed my mind. I'm gonna see them live at MSG because I didn't go the ones in Santa Clara and Chicago which is too fucking far from me. This show at MSG is so close to me and finally I can attend a proper goodbye show but like I say again, "I hope John doesn't screw this special show for deadheads of the east coast".

It's no surprise that he can play the guitar well, good for him, who cares, the Grateful Dead should be grateful to have that dead weight, so that they can hear all the more grating chatter and see all the more dead eyes in the audience when they play. But, when it comes to the music that he wrote, the kind that he sat in his bedroom weeping while experimenting with cords and lyrics, that stuff..... it's.... it's blackness... inner darkness,,,,, which rather than turned into sweet wine like all good artists do, is defecated as black and foul as it was while churning on the inside. Mayer is what the writhing Judas listens to in the otherwise tropical vacation resort that is the seventh circle of Hell.
