haha I know exactly what you are saying. that happens every so often. someone orders something completely different than they thought they ordered, and the server comes back and tells you that they wanted something else, so you have to cook it as fast as you can just to get it out.... and alot of times the line cooks think its the servers fault.

when I worked at an italian restaurant, and we had a party room booked, sometimes we would come up with the bill and tell them that the gratuity was up to them, and usually they would pay more than 15 percent..... other than that, we always charged 15 percent grat on the whole party.

my only real peeve with restaurants is when the server either completely disappears (I know they're busy sometimes, but if they only come out to drop your plate on the table and don't ever come back to refill drinks, that bugs me... if they're somewhere on the floor I can at least wave them over) or is extremely rude to me - won't make eye contact, is short and curt, not at all helpful if you have a question, just doesnt' seem to care about their job at all....

I still usually tip when they disappear, just far less than usual. I will not tip if the server has been outrageously rude to me though. And I usually don't bother going back to that restaurant. I don't tip huge, mostly because I don't make much money (usually tip 10%), but for really bloody good service I'll tip a lot more.

that made me laugh so freakin' hard!!!!!!!!

    * sniffs cards in wallet *

nope -- not a stinky one yet

my only real peave is not keeping my drink glass full

When my friends and I go out as a group, we can be quite a handfull, so if the waitstaff is good (which they are 90% of the time), they can count on a 30-50% tip (yeah, that much of a handfull). Any other time at least 20%, because it's a pretty tough, sometimes thankless job.

Not to be a bitch to you personally, but as one who has held several waitress positions, I am personally fucking offended when I get a measly 10% tip, unless I know I've given shitty service. There are times, especially when I was a smoker, when, at the end of a really busy lunch or dinner rush, going to sit down or going to have at least half a cigarette was more important than that tip... But unless I've done something to deserve such a poor tip, I expect at least 15%. If I get less, you can be assured that, if you ever come back, you will get shittier service -- everyone else, who is likely to tip decently, will be a higher priority, so, for example, your drink won't get refilled until everyone else in my section is happy & has full drinks, even if your drink has been empty since before they needed a refill.

If you can't afford to tip decently, go to McDonalds or something. I mean, at a sit-down restaurant, you're taking up a table from someone who is making $2.13/hour! Come on!

Keep in mind that what is customary in the US regarding gratuity is not always replicated elsewhere. She is from Canada where servers make a higher wage and the expectations regarding tipping are far lower than the US. This at least is my experience with the province of Quebec. I can't speak for the rest of Canada though.

Must be a New England thing. I've never seen or heard of it being done outside of New England and I have worked in restaurants in Ohio, WV and Maryland.

Oddly enough, I first learned of it from this very attractive girl on Cape Cod about ten years ago.

So, to all the asshole restaurant patrons of the world I ask, 'What's in your wallet?'

I was not aware of that, tho maybe I should have been from other threads!

The comment struck a nerve because too many people come in & tip poorly for exactly that reason. Some will even say "sorry I can't leave more, but I'm broke." Then what the fuck are you doing going out to a nice restauant??? Why did I waste my time giving you good service, when I could have focused on getting a better tip from that other table?

The only thing that pissed me off worse were people who came in with like 2-3 kids for each adult, let the kids scream & make a mess, then tipped by percentage instead of considering what a pain in the ass they were!
