I should define free the way I tried to use it. I know that nothing can be free, of money or material, but when I say free I mean using little material, or little money. When I said music is free, I meant that once you learn an instrument, you can play it all your life. Conversely in the world of materialism, once you buy something, like a television for example, Its not around for long. Tv's are constantly being updated, so you always have to buy that new HD tv. It's the same with the other things I listed. They are free, in the way I described them above, and have a much nicer experience.
The vast majority of musicians (I'll guess 99.998%) are never going to see the mega-wealth that some of you are talking about. Even the ones who do get that rich today aren't doing it through album sales. They have endorsements, etc that are more lucrative. Plus....the musicians who are supposedly getting rich are a lot less rich than many people think. Record deals are always geared toward the label until you have some serious clout. For example....let's take GnR's Appetite For Destruction....it was their breakout album and was insanely popular (I remember it well actually ) This is just a guess but I bet it has sold millions of copies and the band didn't get $2 per album sale to split among themselves. In fact, I'm going to try to find out how much it was in a sec but I bet that's true. Artists are not the ones keeping the millions of dollars spent on music. I'm sure the GnR members are doing fine but the industry made a lot more money from that album than they did.
You are afflicted by what is called "the Marxist labor theory of value", which he stole from Ricardo. Google "subjective theory of value" and live commie free forever.
What's wrong with humming or whistling a little tune? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5VxrGCrieI"]scribbling and humming - YouTube ...and art is also free.
u utah philips once said 'a protest song is any song you sing yourself'. there's lots of good music being made all the time by people who don't buy and sell it. music isn't the only thing either.
I think it's a question of balance. Wealth needs to be distributed more fairly, excess reined in etc, but I think you're also right that people have to have some incentive to do creative and new things which may then benefit many others. The margin of difference between the super rich and the poor though is way beyond all sense and reason at present. I don't think music is really free unless you get it through illegal downloading. Even then, you have pay for the computer etc on which to download. On the other hand, anyone can sing a song, anyone can have a dance fully gratis.
